Teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has added another remarkable achievement to his rapidly growing cricket career by becoming the youngest player in Duleep Trophy history to score a half-century.

The 15-year-old created the record while representing East Zone against Central Zone in the 2026 Duleep Trophy semi-final in Bengaluru. Showing his attacking approach from the start, Sooryavanshi reached his fifty in just 42 deliveries before going on to score 92 from 81 balls. He missed a century by only eight runs but still walked away with a historic milestone.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Breaks 57-Year-Old Record

Sooryavanshi was 15 years and 157 days old when he completed his half-century, making him the youngest batter ever to reach fifty in the Duleep Trophy.

The previous record belonged to Laxman Singh, who was 16 years and 23 days old when he registered a Duleep Trophy fifty in 1969. The record had stood for 57 years before Sooryavanshi surpassed it during the semi-final in Bengaluru.

Piyush Chawla is also among the youngest players to have scored a fifty in the tournament, having achieved the feat as a 16-year-old in 2005.

Sooryavanshi continued attacking after reaching his half-century and looked set for a memorable hundred before his innings ended at 92. Despite falling short of three figures, his performance further strengthened his reputation as one of the most exciting young talents in Indian cricket.

Teenager Takes On Leadership Responsibility

The match had already become memorable for Sooryavanshi even before his record-breaking innings.

East Zone captain Ishan Kishan was forced to leave the field temporarily after being struck on his right wrist. During his absence, Sooryavanshi was handed stand-in captaincy duties for a period around the lunch interval.

Despite his young age, he was trusted to manage a bowling attack featuring several experienced players.

One of his notable moments as stand-in captain came during an appeal against Central Zone opener Aryan Juyal. After the on-field decision went against East Zone, Sooryavanshi opted for a review. The decision proved successful, with Juyal eventually dismissed for 46.

East Zone Makes Strong Start Against Central Zone

East Zone had earlier chosen to bowl after winning the toss and managed to restrict Central Zone to 266 in 80.1 overs.

Mukesh Kumar and Abhijit Sarkar claimed three wickets each, while Mohammed Shami and Md Kounain Quraishi took two wickets apiece. Rinku Singh was Central Zone’s leading scorer with 60 runs.

Sooryavanshi then shifted the momentum with his aggressive 92, ensuring that his name remained at the centre of attention.

At just 15, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi continues to make headlines with performances well beyond his age. Breaking a record that had remained untouched since 1969 represents another major step in his early career.

His ability to handle temporary captaincy responsibilities and then produce a record-breaking innings highlighted both confidence and maturity.

Although a century narrowly escaped him, becoming the youngest half-centurion in Duleep Trophy history ensures that this semi-final will remain a significant milestone in Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s emerging cricket journey.
