Cristiano Ronaldo’s sudden Portugal camp exit has created fresh uncertainty around the national team ahead of its UEFA Nations League match against Denmark. The 41-year-old captain confirmed his departure after speaking with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença and said he would explain his reasons later.
Dispute
Ronaldo announced on September 30 that he had decided to leave Portugal’s training camp in Copenhagen following coach Jorge Jesus’s pre-match press conference and a conversation with Proença.
In his statement, Ronaldo said he would tell Portuguese supporters “the truth” about the reasons behind his decision when the time was right. He also wished Portugal and his teammates success, without publicly detailing the disagreement that led to his departure
The Portuguese Football Federation later confirmed that Ronaldo had left the camp but did not provide a reason. It said the remaining 24 players would continue preparations for the upcoming matches as planned.
Denmark
The timing of the exit is significant because Portugal is due to face Denmark in the Nations League on Thursday.
Jesus had told reporters earlier that Ronaldo would not start the Denmark match. The forward had also remained on the bench throughout Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway, an unusual situation for the country’s record goalscorer and most-capped player.
Jesus said Ronaldo could be used from the bench depending on how the game developed and stressed that team selection remained entirely his responsibility.
FPF
Federation president Pedro Proença travelled to Copenhagen amid growing speculation about tension between Ronaldo and Jesus.
Ronaldo’s statement specifically noted that he spoke with Proença before deciding to leave the camp. The FPF has not suggested that Ronaldo has retired from international football, and no official announcement has been made about the end of his Portugal career.
That distinction matters because speculation about retirement has increased rapidly since his departure, but Ronaldo himself has not said that he is permanently leaving the national team.
Training
Questions around Ronaldo’s position intensified after he spent several days away from normal team training.
He did not play against Norway and subsequently trained in the gym rather than with the main squad. Jesus rejected suggestions that Ronaldo had refused to train and said there had been no disciplinary incident.
The coach said Ronaldo had indicated he would respect whatever sporting decision was made, including being left on the bench or out of the team.
However, Ronaldo then left Parken Stadium before Wednesday’s scheduled training session, shortly after Jesus had told reporters that he expected him to participate.
Future
Ronaldo’s departure raises questions about his immediate future with Portugal, but the available facts do not establish that he has retired internationally.
He remains Portugal’s record scorer with 146 goals and its most-capped player with 234 appearances. His decision to promise a later explanation suggests the dispute may involve issues he does not yet want to discuss publicly.
For now, Portugal must prepare for Denmark without its captain, while Ronaldo’s next statement could determine whether this episode is a temporary disagreement or a more serious turning point in his international career.
