India produced a stunning batting performance against New Zealand in the third T20 International at Hnry Stadium in Wellington on October 27, 2026. Chasing a challenging target of 199 runs, Abhishek Sharma and teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi gave India a flying start with an explosive 133-run opening partnership. However, New Zealand pacer Matthew Fisher finally broke the dangerous stand by dismissing Sooryavanshi for 45 runs.

Matthew Fisher claims maiden T20I wicket as Vaibhav Sooryavanshi departs

India's opening batters launched an aggressive attack on the New Zealand bowlers from the beginning. Abhishek Sharma dominated with powerful sixes and well-timed boundaries, while Vaibhav Sooryavanshi displayed remarkable confidence against the experienced bowling attack.

The pair raced to 118 runs without losing a wicket in the first six overs, putting New Zealand under enormous pressure. Their attacking approach continued beyond the powerplay as India's score reached 133 in just seven overs.

Matthew Fisher finally provided New Zealand with a much-needed breakthrough on the first delivery of the eighth over. Sooryavanshi attempted to clear the boundary but failed to connect properly with Fisher's full-length delivery.

Daryl Mitchell produced a brilliant diving catch near the long-on boundary, ending Sooryavanshi's entertaining innings of 45 runs from 19 balls. The dismissal gave Fisher his maiden T20 International wicket and brought some relief to the struggling New Zealand bowling unit.

Despite losing Sooryavanshi, India remained in a commanding position, requiring only 66 runs from 77 deliveries at the time of his dismissal.

Abhishek Sharma's explosive innings puts India in control

Abhishek Sharma continued his aggressive batting after Sooryavanshi's departure, keeping India's chase firmly on track. Sanju Samson joined him at the crease as New Zealand searched for more wickets.

Abhishek's powerful hitting had already taken the game away from New Zealand's bowlers. At the end of seven overs, he was unbeaten on 80 from just 25 deliveries, having dominated the opening partnership.

According to the live update at 3:05 PM IST, India had reached 151/1 in 7.5 overs, needing another 48 runs to secure victory and take an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series.

Earlier, New Zealand posted 198/3 in their 20 overs, with Daryl Mitchell playing a crucial unbeaten knock of 89 runs from 52 balls. Finn Allen contributed 40 runs, while Bevon Jacobs remained unbeaten on 39.

India entered the match leading the series 2-0 after winning both opening encounters in Christchurch. Captain Shreyas Iyer's team is now looking to continue its winning momentum and seal the five-match series.

With Ishan Kishan unavailable because of injury, Sooryavanshi received another opportunity to impress at the international level. Although he narrowly missed his half-century, his fearless batting helped put India in a commanding position.

For New Zealand, Fisher's breakthrough offered a brief moment of hope, but India's aggressive batting has left the hosts facing a difficult challenge as they fight to keep the series alive.
