Veep Polls: BJP’s Tamil Nadu Move Forces Dilemma for TDP; Opposition Responds with Andhra Choice
In the run-up to the Vice Presidential election, the BJP has maneuvered cleverly, placing the DMK in a tricky position by selecting CP Radhakrishnan, a veteran BJP leader from Tamil Nadu, as their Vice Presidential candidate. The Opposition, however, has responded with its own strategy, naming Justice (retired) B Sudershan Reddy from Andhra Pradesh as its candidate, creating a political dilemma for the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), a key ally of the BJP at the Centre.
TDP Faces Tough Choice Between Local and National Allegiance
The TDP, led by N Chandrababu Naidu, has already announced support for the NDA's candidate, CP Radhakrishnan. However, with the Opposition now presenting B Sudershan Reddy, a retired judge from Andhra Pradesh, the TDP finds itself in a tough spot. The party must decide whether to maintain loyalty to its alliance with the BJP or back a local candidate in a contest that could have significant political ramifications.
Reddy, who hails from Rangareddy district, has had a distinguished career in the legal field, including serving as the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court and later as a Supreme Court judge. His candidacy for Vice President has already gained traction within the Opposition, with other parties such as the YSRCP and BRS likely to reconsider their stance and support Reddy for the post.
BJP's Tamil Pride Dilemma for DMK and TDP
The BJP’s choice of CP Radhakrishnan for Vice President has already caused tension within the DMK, with Tamil pride becoming a key issue. Despite the pressure, DMK has argued that the candidate should be judged politically rather than just based on regional identity. As the TDP faces its own dilemma, questions arise about whether they will vote in favor of a Tamil candidate or opt for a candidate from their home state.
The Opposition's candidate also signals a larger ideological battle, with the India bloc aiming to frame the election as more than a mere contest for power. The Opposition wants to portray this race as a contest of values, hoping to send a message about their fight against what they perceive as the BJP’s misuse of institutions like the Election Commission.
The Electoral Numbers
As per the electoral college system, the Vice President is elected by members of both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, requiring at least 392 votes to win. The NDA holds a strong lead with 293 seats in Lok Sabha and 133 in Rajya Sabha, making it likely that CP Radhakrishnan will win the Vice Presidential race, barring any rebellion from NDA members.
However, the Opposition’s challenge is not just to win, but to create an optics battle to highlight its unity and present a cohesive front in the wake of multiple controversies surrounding the ruling party. The Opposition’s strategic move to field B Sudershan Reddy is part of their plan to send a broader ideological message ahead of 2024 elections.
