Chelsea Crush Djurgarden 4-1, Real Betis Edge Fiorentina in UEFA Conference League Semi-Finals

Chelsea moved one step closer to securing a spot in the UEFA Conference League final with a commanding 4-1 victory over Swedish side Djurgarden in Stockholm. The London club, under manager Enzo Maresca, showcased attacking flair and tactical control as they overpowered their injury-hit opponents in the first leg of the semi-final.

Jadon Sancho opened the scoring early in the match, collecting a lofted through-ball and calmly finishing past the goalkeeper. A slice of misfortune followed for Djurgarden when Marcus Danielson's attempted clearance ricocheted off his own arm and into the net, giving Chelsea a 1-0 cushion that visibly settled the visitors on the unfamiliar artificial turf.

Chelsea steadily took control of the match, and their dominance was rewarded again just before the break. Winger Noni Madueke wrong-footed the Djurgarden defence with a clever feint before curling a composed finish inside the near post to make it 2-0. Despite a late scare in the half when Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen had to stretch to tip a deflected strike behind, the visitors were comfortably in control.

Senegalese striker Nicolas Jackson extended the lead with two goals in quick succession during the second half. His first came from close range after a defensive mix-up, and his second was a spectacular left-footed strike from the edge of the box. Djurgarden did manage a consolation through 18-year-old Isak Alemayehu Mulugeta, who scored his first senior goal with a powerful header.

Chelsea, playing in the Conference League for the first time, now have one foot in the final, which will be held in Wroclaw, Poland, on May 28. Should they lift the trophy, it would add to an already impressive European collection that includes two Champions League titles, two Europa League victories, and a pair of UEFA Cup Winners’ Cups.

Djurgarden, despite the scoreline, made history by becoming the first Swedish side to reach a European semi-final since 1987. Hampered by injuries, coach Jani Honkavaara had only 14 senior players to select from for the daunting clash against the Premier League giants. In the other semi-final in Spain, Real Betis edged Fiorentina 2-1 in a closely fought contest in Andalusia. Abde Ezzalzouli gave the hosts an early lead, firing in a thunderous effort that bounced in off the crossbar after persistent work from striker Cedric Bakambu. Fiorentina threatened an equaliser through Rolando Mandragora, whose header went narrowly wide.

Marc Bartra missed a chance to double Betis' lead just before halftime, but Antony on loan from Manchester United made no mistake in the 64th minute with a stunning long-range strike to put Betis 2-0 up. Fiorentina pulled one back through Luca Ranieri, who finished from close range after a pass by Robin Gosens. Despite being second best for most of the match, the Italians will take hope into the return leg with an away goal to their name. Both second-leg fixtures are scheduled for next Thursday, with Chelsea hosting Djurgarden at Stamford Bridge and Fiorentina looking to overturn the deficit at home against Real Betis. With a place in the Conference League final at stake, the matches promise drama, tension, and top-tier football.
