As Digital India celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared a heartfelt blog titled 'A Decade of Digital India', highlighting the initiative's far-reaching impact on Indian society. What began as a government program aimed at bridging the digital divide has now evolved into a nationwide movement that empowers people and drives the nation towards self-reliance.
Launched in 2015, Digital India aimed to enhance digital infrastructure, provide online government services, and improve technology access for all citizens. Over the last decade, the program has achieved remarkable milestones. Internet users in India grew exponentially from 25 crore in 2014 to over 85 crore today. The country has also witnessed rapid advancements in infrastructure, including the laying of over 42 lakh kilometres of optical fibre and the establishment of more than 4.8 lakh 5G stations in just two years.
One of the most significant achievements of Digital India is its role in fighting corruption. By ensuring the direct transfer of benefits to citizens through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system, over Rs 34 lakh crore has been transferred, saving Rs 3.5 lakh crore by eliminating middlemen and reducing leakages.
The digital revolution has made life simpler and more efficient. With initiatives like UPI, India now handles over 100 billion real-time transactions every year. Platforms like DigiLocker, CoWIN, and PM-WANI have streamlined services, with DigiLocker alone hosting over 775 crore documents for 54 crore users. The SVAMITVA scheme uses drones to map rural land and issue property cards, helping villagers access loans and resolve land disputes.
PM Modi also acknowledged the significant role startups play in making India self-reliant. Today, India has over 1.25 lakh registered startups and more than 110 unicorns. The India AI Mission aims to provide affordable computing access, allowing the youth of India to lead the global artificial intelligence revolution.
As India continues its digital journey, PM Modi emphasized the importance of innovation and inclusive policies, urging citizens to build solutions that solve real-world problems, promote equality, and help India lead the digital world. Digital India, he concluded, has proven that with the right intent, the nation can achieve massive transformation, making it a model for the world.
