Marjorie Taylor Greene fires back as Trump rescinds endorsement and tensions rise

President Donald Trump formally withdrew his endorsement of Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene on Friday, ending a long-running alliance that had once positioned Greene among his most vocal supporters in Congress. The move marked the latest escalation in a widening political rift, one that has increasingly drawn national attention as debates over foreign policy, party loyalty, and the handling of Justice Department documents connected to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein intensify in Washington.

Trump announced the decision through a social media post in which he stated he was retracting his support for Greene’s 2026 reelection bid, accusing the Georgia Republican of shifting her political stance and “going far left.” He also criticized Greene in personal terms, claiming she had repeatedly expressed frustration that he no longer returns her calls. He added that with his responsibilities and numerous contacts, he could not respond daily to what he described as “a ranting lunatic’s call.”

Greene, who entered Congress in 2021 and had long been one of Trump’s most outspoken allies, responded swiftly. In her own online statement, she argued that Trump was targeting her to intimidate other Republicans ahead of a vote to release Justice Department files related to the Epstein case. She has publicly supported efforts to force the documents’ release, joining a small group of House Republicans on a discharge petition that could compel a vote. She suggested the former president was attempting to prevent broader transparency on the issue, noting that many Americans want to understand which public figures may have been connected to Epstein.

The dispute follows weeks of escalating criticism from Greene, who has said Trump has been overly focused on his international engagements and insufficiently committed to communicating his domestic agenda. She has conveyed her concerns on national platforms, saying the administration should shift more attention to economic pressures facing American families, including rising costs and affordability challenges.

Trump, speaking aboard Air Force One earlier on Friday, defended his travel schedule and relationship-building with foreign leaders. He argued that his diplomatic efforts, particularly with China, were essential for maintaining the nation’s economic stability. He added that his international work benefited states like Georgia by safeguarding industries and supply chains involving rare earth materials. Trump insisted that he remains in the United States “95 to 98 percent of the time,” and said long overseas trips were not something he preferred.

The president also accused Greene of altering her political approach in recent weeks, pointing to her criticism surrounding the government shutdown debate and her renewed focus on Epstein-related matters. He claimed constituents in her district had already expressed interest in supporting a primary challenger and said he was open to endorsing a rival candidate.

Greene countered by sharing what appeared to be text messages addressed to Trump and his aide, Natalie Harp. She insisted that everyday Americans are more concerned about economic hardships, foreign conflicts, and the diminishing prospects of achieving the American dream than about internal party disputes. She urged Trump to address the concerns of “forgotten men and women” who feel increasingly disconnected from the federal government.

In one message addressed to a contact labeled “DJT,” Greene encouraged Trump to confront the broader implications of the Epstein scandal and what she described as influence held by entrenched bureaucratic forces. In a separate message to Harp, she reiterated her support for Trump but stressed that calls for accountability over the exploitation of minors should not be dismissed as a hoax. She said that women who suffered abuse deserved recognition and action from national leaders.

As the conflict deepens, the breakdown between Trump and Greene underscores a growing divide within the Republican Party, highlighting tensions over foreign policy, transparency, party messaging, and the direction of conservative leadership heading into the next election cycle.
