Belleville Mayor Upset: Frank Velez Wins After Fire Backlash

Belleville Mayor Election Results

Frank Velez defeated incumbent Michael Melham in the Belleville mayor election, ending Melham’s bid for a third term after a race shaped by local trust, school safety and the town’s response to a major warehouse fire.

Unofficial results from the Essex County Clerk’s Office for Tuesday, May 12, 2026, showed Velez with 3,255 votes, or 59.47%, while Melham received 2,218 votes, or 40.53%, with all districts reporting.

Fire Response Criticism Raises Political Stakes

The upset came one week after a massive warehouse fire disrupted Belleville, New Jersey, closed schools and raised concerns about smoke, air quality and emergency communication.

Parents and educators questioned whether families received clear, timely updates during the first 96 hours after the fire. A joint letter from Belleville Public School 9 Home and School Association and the Belleville Education Association cited concerns over air quality transparency, late-night schedule changes and the impact on students.

What Frank Velez Faces Next

Velez now enters office with immediate pressure to rebuild public confidence. For many Belleville families, the election result was not only about changing leadership, but about demanding clearer communication when public safety, schools and children’s routines are at stake.

His early test will be whether Town Hall can provide faster emergency alerts, clearer environmental updates and a more coordinated response before the next crisis.
