Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked this morning during a public meeting at her residence. The incident occurred during the 'Jansunwai' session, a regular event where the Chief Minister addresses public concerns. The attacker, identified as Rajesh Sakriya from Rajkot, Gujarat, approached the Chief Minister with papers in hand and suddenly launched an attack, injuring her hand and head.
Immediate action was taken by her security personnel, who apprehended the attacker and handed him over to the authorities for questioning. Delhi Police senior officers and BJP leaders swiftly arrived at the scene to ensure the safety of the premises.
Initial reports suggest that the attacker may have been upset over the Supreme Court's recent ruling regarding the roundup of stray dogs in Delhi NCR. Rajesh's mother, Bhanu Sakriya, indicated that her son was a dog lover and had strong feelings about the ruling. However, there are speculations within the BJP that the attack may have been politically motivated.
Senior BJP leader Harish Khurana condemned the attack, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation. Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa also expressed concern, suggesting that political rivals might be behind the attack due to the Chief Minister's significant work in the region. Opposition leaders, including AAP's Atishi, have strongly condemned the attack, calling for the strictest action against those responsible. "While there is room for protest in a democracy, violence has no place," said Atishi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly.
Delhi Police Commissioner SBK Singh will oversee the investigation to understand the reasons behind this security breach. Eyewitnesses reported that the attacker had been calm at first, engaging in conversation with the Chief Minister before launching the assault. The investigation will also explore whether any political motives were involved and ensure that such security lapses do not occur in the future.
