Trump Pushes Federal Workforce Overhaul

Trump Supports Cuts At Intelligence Office

US President Donald Trump said he would support staff reductions within the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, defending his decision to name Bill Pulte as acting director despite questions about Pulte’s limited intelligence background. Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump said he would not object if Pulte reduced the size of the office, arguing that staffing levels had remained too high for too long. The office coordinates work across the US intelligence community, which includes 18 agencies, making any leadership change politically and operationally significant.

Pulte Appointment Raises Experience Questions

Pulte currently leads the Federal Housing Finance Agency and was chosen to temporarily replace Tulsi Gabbard as the country’s top intelligence official. His appointment has drawn scrutiny because the role requires oversight of sensitive national security operations, intelligence coordination, and interagency decision-making. Trump, however, has framed the move as part of a broader effort to reduce bureaucracy and remove officials he believes should not remain in government service. In a separate interview, he said he wanted the intelligence structure to be smaller and claimed some employees were holdovers from previous administrations.

Federal Workforce Changes Continue

The intelligence shake-up comes as the Trump administration advances a wider restructuring of the federal workforce. Trump signed an executive order making it easier to remove thousands of senior federal employees involved in policy-related roles. The order reclassifies about 8,000 workers into a category covering positions with confidential, policy-determining, policy-making, or policy-advocating duties, reducing traditional job protections for those roles. Supporters view the change as a way to improve accountability, while critics warn it could weaken civil service independence and politicize senior government jobs.

Downsizing Becomes Central Policy Theme

Trump’s latest comments show that downsizing remains a central part of his second-term governing agenda. The administration has repeatedly argued that the federal bureaucracy is too large, too costly, and insufficiently aligned with elected leadership. Earlier cost-cutting efforts, including the Department of Government Efficiency initiative associated with Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, reflected the same push to reduce spending and payroll pressure. The proposed intelligence cuts now place national security agencies inside that larger debate over efficiency, loyalty, and the future shape of the federal government.
