Tesla’s Vaibhav Taneja Outearned Nadella, Pichai in 2024

In a landmark moment for Indian-origin executives in global tech, Tesla’s Chief Financial Officer Vaibhav Taneja outpaced some of the highest-paid CEOs in the world in 2024. Taneja earned a staggering $139 million (approximately ₹1,157 crore), eclipsing the total compensation of Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai.

Taneja’s pay package, largely driven by Tesla stock options and equity grants following his promotion to CFO in August 2023, propelled him ahead of many peers in the executive world. According to filings, his base salary was $400,000 (₹3.33 crore), but the rapid rise in Tesla’s stock price multiplied the value of his equity awards, making his 2024 earnings among the highest ever recorded for a CFO. By comparison, Satya Nadella earned $79.1 million (₹658 crore), while Sundar Pichai’s 2024 compensation stood at $10.73 million (₹89 crore).

Despite a turbulent year for Tesla, marked by declining electric vehicle (EV) deliveries and shrinking profits, the company's share price climbed from approximately $250 (₹20,800) in early 2024 to $342 (₹28,400) by May 19, 2025. This surge significantly elevated the value of equity-based compensation packages tied to Tesla’s performance.

A Chartered Accountant by profession, Vaibhav Taneja holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Delhi. He began his professional journey at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), where he spent 17 years between India and the United States, gaining extensive experience in auditing and corporate finance.

In 2016, Taneja joined SolarCity Corporation, a solar energy company where he served as Vice President and Corporate Controller. The same year, SolarCity was acquired by Tesla, and Taneja played a key role in integrating its accounting functions with Tesla’s.

Taneja joined Tesla formally in 2017 as Assistant Corporate Controller, rose to Corporate Controller in 2018, and was appointed Chief Accounting Officer in 2019. His rapid rise through the ranks was marked by financial discipline and strategic oversight during Tesla’s high-growth years.

In 2021, he was named Director of Tesla India Motors and Energy Pvt Ltd, Tesla’s Indian subsidiary, reinforcing the company's interest in expanding its operations in India. His elevation to Chief Financial Officer in 2023 placed him at the center of Tesla's global financial strategy at a pivotal time for the company.

Taneja’s historic earnings have now placed him among the highest-paid financial executives in the world. His 2024 compensation surpassed the previous record for a CFO, set by Nikola Corporation’s CFO in 2020, who earned $86 million before the company filed for bankruptcy in 2024.

The achievement also brings attention to the growing influence of Indian-origin professionals in the global corporate landscape, many of whom now hold leadership positions in the world’s biggest technology and energy firms. As Tesla continues to navigate a complex market with increased competition and pressure on EV production, all eyes will be on Taneja and his financial stewardship to maintain the company's long-term profitability and investor confidence.
