The San Antonio Spurs are locking in their future as reports confirm that guard De’Aaron Fox has agreed to a four-year, $228 million maximum contract extension with the team. According to a source familiar with the negotiations, the deal will kick in during the 2026–27 NBA season, following the conclusion of Fox’s current five-year, $163 million deal signed with the Sacramento Kings.
While the Spurs have yet to make an official announcement, ESPN was the first to break the news, and the Associated Press has also confirmed the extension through sources requesting anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the ongoing formalities.
Fox, 27, arrived in San Antonio following a major trade deadline move last season, where he was acquired from the Sacramento Kings. Since his arrival, he has averaged 19.7 points and 6.8 assists in 17 games with the Spurs before being sidelined for the remainder of the season due to surgery on his left hand to repair the extensor tendon in his fifth finger.
With career averages of 21.5 points and 6.1 assists over eight NBA seasons, Fox has proven himself as one of the league's most dynamic point guards. His ability to drive the offense and facilitate scoring opportunities has already made an impact in San Antonio, despite his shortened debut run.
This massive contract extension solidifies Fox as a central pillar in a rapidly rising Spurs squad. Alongside Victor Wembanyama, who dazzled in his rookie season, 2024–25 NBA Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle, and No. 2 overall pick Dylan Harper, the Spurs are shaping up as one of the most exciting young cores in the Western Conference.
Fox’s leadership and playoff experience are expected to complement the young talent on the roster, potentially turning the Spurs into a legitimate title contender in the coming seasons. The franchise has been rebuilding steadily since the departure of long-time stars like Tim Duncan, Manu Ginóbili, and Tony Parker, and now seems positioned to re-enter the championship conversation. With Fox's future now secured, attention turns to the team’s performance in the upcoming season and how quickly this talented roster can translate potential into postseason success.
