CBN’s Big Bet on Andhra Pradesh’s Coastline: A Vision to Transform the State into a Logistics Hub

At the East Coast Maritime & Logistics Summit, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu outlined an ambitious plan to turn the state’s coastline into a vibrant logistics and trade hub. The summit, held to strategize the development of the state’s coastal infrastructure, highlighted key initiatives that would enhance Andhra Pradesh’s position as a major player in global trade, shipping, and logistics.

With a coastline stretching 1,050 kilometers, the second-longest in India, Andhra Pradesh is strategically poised to become the gateway of the East Coast. CM Naidu’s plan includes not only the expansion of port infrastructure but also a deep investment in human capital and digital transformation to create a logistics ecosystem that supports both social and economic growth for the state.

Building Human Capital for a Logistics Economy

Recognizing that a robust logistics ecosystem requires skilled professionals, Andhra Pradesh has announced the establishment of Logistics and Civil Aviation Universities, in collaboration with the Adani and GMR Group. These institutions aim to build a specialized talent pipeline, focusing on research, innovation, and industry partnerships. The move will enhance the state’s global connectivity while ensuring that the local workforce can effectively contribute to the rapidly growing logistics sector.

Expanding Port Infrastructure and Economic Contribution

The state already boasts six operational ports with four more under development. The long-term goal is to ensure that there is a port or fishing harbor every 50 kilometers along its coast. This expansion will enhance multimodal cargo movement, connecting the heart of India to international markets. With Andhra Pradesh already serving five landlocked states, its growing port network will cement its role as a vital link for eastern and central India.

At present, logistics contributes 1% to the state's GSDP, but Naidu's government plans to triple this share to 3% in the coming years. This growth will be fueled by strategic initiatives like shipbuilding yards, container repair hubs, and defense vessel manufacturing units, which are expected to attract new industries to the state, especially in the defense and shipbuilding sectors.

Reviving Inland Water Transport

A key component of Naidu’s vision is the revival of the Buckingham Canal, an inland waterway running from Kakinada to Chennai. Once fully developed, this waterway will provide a sustainable and cost-effective alternative for cargo transportation. By easing congestion on roads and rail networks, it will reduce transportation costs and carbon emissions, enhancing the state's logistics efficiency.

Digital Transformation and Cost Competitiveness

Aligning with global logistics trends, the state is working on creating a digital logistics platform to track cargo, improve supply chain visibility, and integrate various modes of transportation. By aiming to reduce logistics costs from the current 13% of GDP to 8%, Andhra Pradesh intends to make its industries more competitive, attract investment, and enhance its role in both domestic and international trade.
