In a massive boost to India’s digital infrastructure, Google has announced a $10 billion investment to establish a giga-scale AI and data centre hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. This is part of a larger $15 billion plan over the next five years, marking the largest Google AI hub outside the United States, as confirmed by Google Cloud Global CEO Thomas Kurian.
Kurian described the project as not just a technological investment but a transformational one. The facility will be integrated into Google’s global network of 12 AI centres and supported by subsea cable infrastructure, making Visakhapatnam a major global connectivity node. Kurian stated, “We are bringing AI technology and digital infrastructure through subsea cable and network connectivity.”
The announcement was made during a high-profile MoU signing ceremony attended by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and IT Minister Nara Lokesh. Naidu called the project a “landmark moment” for the state and highlighted the efforts of the Prime Minister and other officials in making the vision a reality.
The first phase, involving $10 billion in capital investment, will cover 1 GW of data centre capacity, according to Nara Lokesh. He described it as the culmination of a year-long negotiation process and “just the beginning” of a long-term vision to make Andhra Pradesh a leader in global tech infrastructure.
This initiative comes as India emerges as a hotbed for AI and cloud infrastructure investments, with major players like AWS and Microsoft also expanding. Google recently increased its global CapEx forecast to $85 billion, signalling rapid global expansion in the cloud and AI sectors.
Andhra Pradesh’s own goal of achieving 6GW of data centre capacity by 2029 aligns perfectly with Google’s expansion plans. The Visakhapatnam hub will operate through Raiden Infotech, Google’s Indian subsidiary, and will consist of three campuses across the city, expected to generate thousands of high-tech jobs. By anchoring its AI and digital operations in Visakhapatnam, Google is not just building infrastructure—it’s positioning the city as a global AI capital, strengthening India’s digital economy and reinforcing Andhra Pradesh’s role in the future of cloud and AI.
