Rajeev Chandrasekhar Sparks Row Over Lack Of Muslim Ministers With No Vote, No Post Remark

Kerala BJP state president and former Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar triggered a heated political debate after stating that the Union cabinet has no Muslim ministers because there are no Muslim BJP MPs. Speaking at a press meet in Kozhikode, he said that the community does not vote for the BJP, and therefore the party does not have any elected Muslim representatives to induct into the cabinet. His remarks quickly ignited controversy, drawing reactions from across the political spectrum and renewing discussions about representation, trust and voting patterns among minority communities.

Addressing reporters, Chandrasekhar described the situation as a “chicken-and-egg” issue, noting that political trust between the BJP and the Muslim community has remained weak. He reminded that the BJP and the NDA had Muslim leaders in the past, including Shahnawaz Hussain and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, and pointed out that the party still has representation from Kashmir. He asked where the cycle of trust-building should begin and added that the BJP has not harmed the community in any way. He questioned why Muslims consistently vote for the Congress and whether the community receives any tangible benefits from doing so.

Chandrasekhar reiterated that without Muslim MPs, the BJP cannot accommodate Muslim ministers in the Union cabinet, arguing that representation must originate from democratic choice. His comments have become a major talking point in Kerala, with critics accusing the BJP of deflecting responsibility, while supporters argue that electoral realities cannot be ignored. The debate has also sparked broader conversations on inclusion, representation and how political parties engage with minority voters in a polarised landscape. As reactions continue to pour in, Chandrasekhar’s remarks have added new momentum to ongoing national discussions about diversity within India’s political leadership.
