Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Kerala on March 11 as political activity intensifies ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in the state. The one day visit is expected to focus on both development initiatives and political outreach, with several major events planned in Kochi, the state’s largest city and a key financial centre. The visit comes at a significant time when political parties are preparing for the Assembly polls expected to take place later this year.
According to reports, the Prime Minister will participate in multiple programmes during his visit. One of the key events includes attending the All Kerala Dheevara Conference at Marine Drive in Kochi. In addition, PM Modi is expected to inaugurate several railway development projects in the city that are aimed at improving infrastructure and transportation facilities in the region.
In the evening, the Prime Minister will address a National Democratic Alliance rally at Kaloor Stadium. Party sources say the rally is expected to witness a large turnout of supporters and party workers. Ahead of the rally, the Prime Minister is also likely to take part in a short roadshow through Kochi where thousands of supporters are expected to gather to welcome him.
The visit has drawn significant political attention as it comes just weeks after the Union Cabinet approved a proposal to rename the state of Kerala as Keralam. The decision followed a resolution passed unanimously by the Kerala Assembly in June 2024 requesting the central government to officially adopt the new name. The move has generated political discussions across the state and is likely to remain a topic of debate during the election campaign.
Kerala will go to polls along with Tamil Nadu, Assam, Puducherry and West Bengal during the April and May election period this year. Traditionally the state has been dominated by the Congress led United Democratic Front and the Left Democratic Front. The Bharatiya Janata Party has historically struggled to gain a strong foothold in the state’s Assembly elections.
However the political scenario saw a notable change during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections when BJP candidate and popular Malayalam actor Suresh Gopi won the Thrissur parliamentary seat by a margin of more than seventy thousand votes. The victory marked the BJP’s first ever Lok Sabha seat from Kerala and significantly boosted the party’s confidence in expanding its presence in the state.
During his previous visit to Kerala, PM Modi launched several development initiatives including new train services and projects related to technology and healthcare infrastructure in Thiruvananthapuram. With the Assembly elections approaching, his upcoming visit to Kochi is expected to play an important role in shaping the political narrative and strengthening the NDA’s campaign in the state.
