Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam has made a bold political move by deciding to contest the upcoming Puducherry Assembly elections independently. The party, led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, has officially announced candidates for all 30 constituencies, signaling its intent to emerge as a strong alternative in the region’s political landscape.
The elections are scheduled to take place on April 9, with counting of votes set for May 4. The current Assembly term will end on June 15, making this election crucial for all major parties. By choosing to go solo, TVK is positioning itself as a fresh force, aiming to capture voter attention without relying on alliances.
The Puducherry political scene has traditionally been dominated by parties like AINRC, DMK, BJP, and Congress. In the 2021 Assembly elections, AINRC emerged as the largest party with 10 seats, while DMK, BJP, and Congress secured six seats each. The election witnessed a high voter turnout of 84.8 percent, indicating strong public participation.
Earlier, in the 2016 elections, Congress had secured a clear majority with 15 seats, followed by AINRC with eight seats. AIADMK and DMK had smaller shares, reflecting a different political balance at that time.
BJP has already announced its first list of nine candidates and is contesting in alliance with AINRC. Key candidates include A Namassivayam from Mannadipet and A Johnkumar from Mudaliarpet, among others. These alliances indicate a competitive electoral battle ahead. In a notable political development, Independent MLA M Sivasankar, who had won from Ozhukarai in 2021, has joined the Congress party ahead of the elections. Such shifts are expected to influence voter perception and campaign strategies in the coming weeks.
With TVK entering the fray independently and established parties strengthening alliances, the 2026 Puducherry Assembly elections are shaping up to be highly competitive. The coming days will reveal whether Vijay’s political gamble can translate into electoral success or if traditional players will continue to dominate the region’s political landscape.
