US Student Visa Cancellations: Latest 2026 Updates for F-1 Students

U.S. student visa cancellations have become a major concern for international students in 2026, especially those on F-1 visas. Recent enforcement updates show that students now need to pay closer attention to visa validity, SEVIS status, travel plans and online screening.

Reuters reported that the Trump administration revoked more than 6,000 student visas in 2025, citing overstays, legal violations and a smaller number of terrorism-related grounds, according to a State Department official. The report marked a sharper enforcement climate for foreign students studying in the United States.

Background: What Happens If a U.S. Student Visa Is Cancelled?

A cancelled U.S. student visa mainly affects a student’s ability to enter or re-enter the United States. It does not always mean the student has automatically lost F-1 status while already inside the country.

The most important question is whether the student’s SEVIS record is still active. If SEVIS is terminated, it can affect study status, work authorization, CPT, OPT and future travel.

Students who receive a visa cancellation notice should contact their university Designated School Official before making travel plans.

A cancelled visa and SEVIS termination can have different consequences. For a full explanation, read our guide on what happens if your U.S. student visa is cancelled.

What Changed for Student Visa Holders?

The U.S. State Department has expanded online presence review for several visa categories. F, M and J student and exchange visitor applicants were already subject to this review. In a March 2026 update, the department also instructed covered visa applicants to keep social media profiles “public” or “open” for vetting.

For students, this means visa screening is no longer limited to documents, interviews and financial proof. Online activity, past violations, overstays, criminal charges or national security concerns may now play a bigger role in visa decisions.

Visa Cancellation Is Not Always SEVIS Termination

A cancelled visa stamp mainly affects travel. If a student is outside the United States, they generally cannot use a cancelled visa to enter the country. If the student is already in the U.S., the bigger question is whether their F-1 status and SEVIS record remain active.

SEVIS termination is more serious. DHS student guidance says a terminated SEVIS record can result in loss of employment authorization and may prevent re-entry on that terminated record. That can affect students on campus employment, CPT, OPT or STEM OPT.

Proposed Rule Could Change F-1 Stay Periods

DHS has also proposed replacing the current “duration of status” system for F, J and I visa holders with fixed admission periods. The proposal would generally limit admission to the program length, capped at four years, with extension requests handled through USCIS if more time is needed.

As of Saturday, June 6, 2026, the rule is under final federal review and has not been confirmed as a published final rule.

What F-1 Students Should Do Now

Students who receive a cancellation notice can also follow our practical checklist on steps to take after an F-1 visa cancellation.

Students should check their visa, I-20, I-94 and SEVIS status before making travel plans. Anyone who receives a visa cancellation or SEVIS notice should contact their university Designated School Official immediately and consider speaking with a qualified immigration attorney.

A visa issue can quickly affect travel, school enrollment and work authorization. For international students, the safest step is to confirm status before leaving the United States or applying for a new visa.
