Tamil Nadu Adds 300 New Buses To Public Transport Fleet

In a significant move aimed at strengthening public transportation services across Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Thursday, June 25, 2026, inaugurated 300 new buses procured by the State Transport Corporation at an estimated cost of Rs 127.21 crore. The buses were flagged off from major transit hubs, including Kilambakkam and Koyambedu bus terminals in Chennai, and began operations immediately after the launch ceremony.

The addition of these buses is expected to improve connectivity, reduce waiting times for passengers and support the growing transportation needs of millions of daily commuters. Officials said the government is focused on ensuring that citizens have access to efficient, reliable and affordable transportation services across cities and rural regions.

CM Vijay Takes Bus Ride To Marina Beach

After launching the new fleet, Chief Minister Vijay boarded one of the buses and travelled to Marina Beach. The move attracted attention from commuters and the public, highlighting the government's efforts to promote the use of public transport and demonstrate confidence in the state's transportation infrastructure.

The newly introduced fleet consists of 164 diesel buses and 136 compressed natural gas buses that comply with BS-VI emission standards. These low-emission vehicles are expected to contribute to cleaner urban mobility while supporting the state's environmental goals. Authorities said the buses have been designed to offer improved passenger comfort and operational efficiency.

Tamil Nadu Transport Network Serves Over 2 Crore Daily

According to official data released by the state government, Tamil Nadu's transport system currently operates through 26 regions and 317 depots with a fleet of around 21,527 buses. The network serves nearly 2.05 crore passengers every day, making it one of the largest public transportation systems in the country.

A significant portion of passengers benefit from government welfare schemes. Around 64 percent of daily commuters, including women, students and persons with disabilities, avail free travel concessions. The administration believes that continued investment in transportation infrastructure will help improve accessibility and support economic activity across the state.

Focus On Smart And Technology-Driven Transport

During a review meeting of the Transport Department held on June 17, Chief Minister Vijay directed officials to transform Tamil Nadu's transportation network into a modern, technology-driven and environmentally sustainable system. The government is planning to implement smart card-based digital fare collection systems, GPS-enabled vehicle location tracking and advanced passenger information systems.

Officials are also working on establishing 24x7 passenger help desks at major bus terminals to improve commuter assistance and service delivery. The initiatives are aimed at creating a more efficient and user-friendly public transport ecosystem while enhancing transparency and operational management.

With the addition of 300 new buses and a renewed focus on modernization, the Tamil Nadu government is taking major steps toward building a stronger and greener transportation network. The latest expansion is expected to benefit millions of passengers while reinforcing public confidence in state-run transport services.
