As he nears his 90th birthday on July 6, 2025, the Dalai Lama has made a significant announcement regarding the future of the Dalai Lama institution, ensuring its continuity after his death. The statement, released ahead of his milestone birthday, is poised to have a profound impact on his followers and the Tibetan community globally.
The Dalai Lama, who is regarded by Tibetans as the 14th reincarnation of the Dalai Lama, acknowledged the many appeals he has received over the years from Tibetans in exile, Buddhists from the Himalayan region, and other parts of the world. These appeals, especially those from Tibetans still living under Chinese rule, have called for the continuation of the institution of the Dalai Lama.
In a video broadcast from Dharamshala, where he has lived for decades, the Dalai Lama affirmed, "The institution of the Dalai Lama will continue," citing numerous requests from across the Tibetan diaspora. The 14th Dalai Lama stated that the responsibility for recognizing the next Dalai Lama, the 15th reincarnation, would lie exclusively with the Gaden Phodrang Trust, the office that oversees the affairs of the Dalai Lama. This announcement comes as a response to concerns over China's potential interference in naming a successor, a process that is critical to Tibet's spiritual leadership.
The announcement is especially significant given the Dalai Lama's advanced age and the ongoing challenges for the Tibetan people. Having lived in exile in India since 1959, after Chinese troops crushed an uprising in Tibet, the Dalai Lama has become a global symbol of non-violence, compassion, and the enduring struggle for Tibetan cultural identity under Chinese rule. His message solidifies his belief that the future of Tibet's spiritual leadership should not fall under foreign influence.
