Single Screens vs Multiplexes: The Decline of Single-Screen Theatres in India

Single Screens vs Multiplexes: The Decline of Single-Screen Theatres in India
  • 07 Sep 2024 01:04 AM

Single-screen theatres have long been a staple of the Indian cinema landscape, holding a special place in the hearts of moviegoers across the country. These venues have offered a traditional movie-watching experience for decades, becoming an integral part of local culture and cinema history. However, the rise of multiplexes over the past two decades has significantly altered the cinema industry’s dynamics, leading to a notable decline in the number of single-screen theatres.

Since 2009, the growth of multiplexes has been remarkable. The number of multiplexes in India has steadily increased, reflecting changing consumer preferences for modern, multi-screen entertainment complexes that provide a range of viewing options, advanced technologies, and added amenities. In contrast, single-screen theatres have seen a steady decrease, with many shutting down due to the evolving market demands and the appeal of multiplexes. As of this year, there are 4,463 multiplexes compared to 4,745 single screens, and projections suggest that multiplexes will soon outnumber single screens.

The decline in single-screen theatres has been significant, with nearly 5,000 closures over the past 14 years. The year 2023 alone is expected to see the closure of more than 660 theatres. This shift highlights the broader challenges faced by single-screen venues, which struggle to compete with the diverse offerings and modern conveniences provided by multiplexes. The impact of this trend is felt acutely in South India, where 66% of the country’s remaining single screens are located, with Telugu-speaking states having the highest concentration.

Despite their rich legacy and historical importance, single-screen theatres are grappling with obsolescence in the face of multiplex expansion. As the cinema industry continues to evolve, the shift towards multiplexes reflects broader consumer trends and market dynamics, reshaping the future of film viewing in India.
