In a surprise move that has stunned both the film industry and audiences, the makers of Bhool Chook Maaf, starring Rajkummar Rao, have cancelled the film’s theatrical release just one day before its scheduled premiere. The film will now debut directly on Amazon Prime Video on May 16. The announcement came as a shock to many, especially since advance bookings were already underway, promotional activities were in full swing, and expectations were building around the film’s box office performance. The sudden switch to OTT has left theatre owners and distributors frustrated and confused.

"Sensitive Conditions in the Country" Cited as Reason
The film’s production house issued a brief statement citing “sensitive conditions in the country” as the reason for pulling out of cinemas. While recent events in India have stirred public discourse, there are no official restrictions on theatre operations, and cinema chains continue to function normally across major cities. This has led many within the industry to question whether other factors such as internal decisions, business strategies, or last-minute streaming deals may have played a role.

Distributors Caught Off Guard, Refunds Initiated
Distributors and exhibitors are now scrambling to deal with the fallout. Many had already secured slots, arranged logistics, and launched local promotions in anticipation of the theatrical release. For some small- and mid-sized exhibitors, Bhool Chook Maaf was expected to bring much-needed footfall during a relatively quiet box office period. Several theatres have now begun issuing refunds for pre-booked tickets, while fans of Rajkummar Rao are turning to social media to express both confusion and support.

OTT: The New Safety Net for Bollywood?
Bhool Chook Maaf’s sudden jump to OTT is yet another sign of the growing influence of streaming platforms in Indian cinema. While the industry has gradually returned to theatres post-pandemic, some producers are still opting for direct-to-digital releases when market uncertainties or timing conflicts arise. Amazon Prime Video, which will now host the film, has secured several high-profile Hindi titles in the past year, and this latest acquisition further strengthens its catalogue of exclusive premieres.

This decision may set a precedent for other upcoming films considering hybrid or last-minute OTT releases. However, such abrupt changes can strain relationships between producers, distributors, and theatre owners, raising concerns about transparency and contractual reliability. For now, fans eager to see Rajkummar Rao’s latest performance can mark May 16 on their calendars. While Bhool Chook Maaf may not grace the big screen, it’s now poised to make waves in the digital world.
