Nagarjuna Finds Playing Villain in Rajinikanth’s Coolie Liberating
Telugu superstar Nagarjuna is set to play the main antagonist in the highly anticipated film Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and starring the legendary Rajinikanth. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Nagarjuna opened up about how this villainous role was unlike anything he has done before, calling the experience "liberating."
Unlike his previous characters that demanded strict decorum, Nagarjuna revealed that playing Simon in Coolie allowed him freedom to explore a different side of acting. He described how Lokesh Kanagaraj first approached him with the question of whether he was comfortable playing a negative role. Interested in the script, Nagarjuna held multiple discussions with the director to fully understand his character.
Nagarjuna shared, "I liked it so much that I made him come back six to seven times to figure out my role! But now, if anyone asked me how my role in 'Coolie' was, I'd answer it in a word: liberating." He emphasized that the role had no pressure to maintain a particular image, unlike his role in the film Kuberaa, where every action was carefully measured.
The film Coolie also features an impressive ensemble cast including Upendra, Sathyaraj, Shruti Haasan, and Soubin Shahir. Produced by Sun Pictures, the film boasts a soundtrack by popular composer Anirudh Ravichander. The movie is scheduled for release on August 14 and is already creating buzz among fans and critics alike.
Nagarjuna’s portrayal as a charming yet sinister villain marks a fresh chapter in his career, showcasing his versatility and willingness to take bold choices in his roles. Coolie is highly awaited not only for Rajinikanth’s presence but also for its gripping story and dynamic cast, making it one of the most talked-about films of 2025.
