Censor Board Stalls Suresh Gopi Film Over Janaki Title

The release of the Malayalam film Janaki vs State of Kerala, starring Union Minister and actor Suresh Gopi and Anupama Parameswaran, has been delayed after the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) raised objections to the film's title. The Mumbai office of the CBFC has asked the filmmakers to change the name “Janaki,” citing its association with the Hindu goddess Sita, and stating that it is inappropriate to use the name in a story centered around sexual assault.

The film had already received a U/A certificate from the CBFC's Thiruvananthapuram office. However, since it is a feature film, it was subsequently forwarded to the Mumbai headquarters, which reportedly raised unofficial objections via WhatsApp calls, leading to the title controversy. Changing the title would require extensive edits, including alterations in dialogues where the protagonist's name is mentioned.

Filmmakers and Industry React Strongly

The move has triggered strong opposition from the Malayalam film industry. The Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA) has condemned the CBFC’s decision and warned of protests if the demands persist. Director MB Padmakumar also came forward, stating that his own film ‘Token Number’ had to change a character name from Janaki Abraham to Jayanthi to get certified. As of now, the film’s release, scheduled for June 27, remains uncertain, and Union Minister Suresh Gopi has not issued a public statement. The incident has sparked debate over religious sensitivity, creative freedom, and censorship in Indian cinema.
