Karnataka Anger Over Demolition of Kannada Icon Vishnuvardhan's Memorial in Bengaluru
The demolition of Dr. Vishnuvardhan's memorial at Abhiman Studio in Bengaluru has ignited a massive uproar, especially among his devoted fans, who have long regarded the memorial as sacred. The memorial, located at the studio where the legendary Kannada actor was cremated in 2009, was demolished overnight between August 7-8, 2025, under police protection and reportedly on the orders of the High Court. This controversial move has left fans devastated and questioning the motives behind the sudden act.
The demolition stems from a legal dispute that has been ongoing for years. In 2015, the Karnataka government allotted two acres of land at the site to the Vishnuvardhan Memorial Trust for the purpose of constructing a permanent tribute to the actor. However, the Balakrishna family, owners of Abhiman Studio, challenged this decision in court. The legal battle culminated in the court ruling to hand the land back to the Balakrishna family, leading to the demolition of the memorial.
Reactions from the Kannada Film Industry
The demolition has sparked widespread condemnation from Kannada cinema stars, with Kichcha Sudeep being the first to publicly criticize the act. Sudeep, a vocal fan of Vishnuvardhan, expressed his displeasure on social media, stating that the destruction of the memorial was akin to the destruction of a temple. He referred to the act as "cowardly", emphasizing that Vishnuvardhan represented much more than just a film star to his fans—he was an emotion. Other stars, including Rishab Shetty, Upendra, and Dhruva Sarja, also voiced their anger and sadness over the incident, with Shetty calling it a "disrespectful" act toward one of the state’s greatest cinematic icons.
The Legal and Political Struggles Behind the Demolition
The dispute over the memorial site has its roots in a complex legal battle involving both the Vishnuvardhan family and the Karnataka government. In August 2023, the Karnataka High Court annulled two government orders issued in 2015, which had allocated the land at Abhiman Studio for the construction of the memorial. The court sided with the Balakrishna family, arguing that the land acquisition process was flawed and lacked proper consent. The court's decision effectively blocked the construction of the memorial at the studio, setting the stage for the demolition.
While the Mysuru memorial for Vishnuvardhan built on five acres of land has been completed, many fans feel that the Abhiman Studio memorial, where the actor was cremated, holds greater sentimental value. Veerakaputra Srinivasa, president of the Vishnuvardhan Fans Association, lamented the demolition as the end of an 11-year struggle to preserve the actor’s legacy in Bengaluru.
There are growing suspicions that political motives might be behind the demolition, with Geeta Bali, a member of the Balakrishna family, suggesting that politicians may have influenced the decision. She expressed her shock, stating that she was unaware of the demolition and claimed that it was her nephew Karthik, who made the decision, allegedly with backing from political figures. These unverified claims have fueled public suspicion about the true reasons behind the removal of the memorial.
As the controversy over the memorial continues, there have been calls from fans and industry figures to build a permanent tribute to Vishnuvardhan alongside Rajkumar and Ambareesh at Kanteerava Studio, where the memorials of the other two legendary Kannada actors are located. Fans argue that Kanteerava Studio, a prominent landmark in Kannada cinema, would be the ideal location to honor Vishnuvardhan as part of the state’s cinematic history.
