Mahavatar Narsimha Director Ashwin Kumar Talks Pressure, Future of the Cinematic Universe
Historically, animated films have struggled to capture mainstream attention in Indian cinema, generally appealing to a niche audience. However, Mahavatar Narsimha, the first film from the Mahavatar Cinematic Universe, is shifting this narrative. Produced by Kleem Productions and initiated by Hombale Films, this mythological animated title has taken the Indian box office by storm.
As it enters its fourth week in theaters, the film continues to draw family audiences from both metros and tier-2 cities, with the Hindi version performing particularly well. In the face of this unprecedented success, director Ashwin Kumar spoke candidly about the pressures of working on such a monumental project. "Pressure is there only if I don’t know what I’m doing. But I have clarity in my mind since I know the next seven films in the universe that I want to develop," Kumar said. This sense of clarity regarding the next titles in the Mahavatar Cinematic Universe is reassuring. Kumar has already outlined seven upcoming films, building confidence in the production process and the trajectory of the franchise.
The Future of the Mahavatar Cinematic Universe
With Mahavatar Narsimha crossing the ₹200 crore India nett benchmark and around ₹260-270 crore worldwide gross, the film continues to maintain solid momentum, heading towards ₹300 crore. The box office success is paving the way for franchise expansion beyond cinema, with plans for publishing, interactive experiences, and more.
The Mahavatar Cinematic Universe has identified the next set of films: Mahavatar Parshuram (2027), Mahavatar Raghunandan (2029), Mahavatar Dwarkadhish (2031), Mahavatar Gokulananda (2033), and the two-parter Mahavatar Kalki (2035 and 2037). This well-structured, long-term vision for storytelling and franchise development is set to establish Indian animated films as a serious player in blockbuster cinema.
Ashwin Kumar’s confident directorial approach and the film's steady momentum indicate that the Mahavatar Cinematic Universe could redefine the Indian animation landscape, attracting greater industry investment and audience engagement. Kumar also confirmed that Mahavatar Parshuram will begin production in November this year.
