Tamil cinema has witnessed several big blockbusters in recent years, but none have managed to cross the magical ₹1000 Cr mark. Actor Siva Karthikeyan, who is among the industry’s rising stars, has now opened up about why Kollywood continues to fall short despite delivering successful films like Vikram, Leo, Jailer, and Amaran.
According to SK, ticket pricing plays a crucial role in deciding whether a film can achieve record-breaking collections. If we charge as much as Bangalore or Mumbai, Jailer would have crossed 800–1000 Crs easily, he explained. While acknowledging that storytelling and pan-Indian appeal also matter, the actor emphasized that Tamil Nadu’s relatively low ticket rates restrict the box office potential of even the biggest hits.
He clarified that he is not personally in favor of increasing ticket prices, suggesting instead that Tamil films need deeper penetration into the North Indian market. For him, the challenge is not just in crafting big-budget spectacles but also ensuring wide accessibility across India.
Siva Karthikeyan pointed out that many recent Tamil releases carried heavy expectations but failed to breach the ₹1000 Cr milestone. Films like Thug Life, the PS franchise, Indian 2, Leo, Coolie, and his own Madharaasi could not deliver the desired numbers, despite strong buzz.
With Amaran, SK has already contributed to building a stronger presence for Tamil cinema in the North Indian circuit. His next release, Parasakthi, directed by Sudha Kongara, is now being keenly watched to see if it can carry forward this push and bring Kollywood closer to its long-awaited ₹1000 Cr breakthrough.
