Manipuri Film Boong To Release In India On September 19 After Festival Acclaim

Manipuri cinema is set to receive a historic boost as the acclaimed film Boong, directed and written by Lakshmipriya Devi, gears up for its theatrical release across select Indian cities on September 19, 2025. Backed by Excel Entertainment, Chalkboard Entertainment, and Suitable Pictures, the film marks a rare opportunity for Manipuri-language cinema to connect with mainstream Indian audiences.

Boong first gained recognition at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, where it premiered to critical praise. Since then, the film has traveled across several international festivals, earning awards and acclaim for its moving narrative and authentic depiction of rural life in Manipur.

The film follows a young boy living with his single mother after the mysterious disappearance of his father Joykumar, who once worked away from home. With a heart full of determination, the boy embarks on a journey with his friend to find his father, hoping to present his mother with the gift of closure. Through humour, innocence, and emotional storytelling, Boong highlights resilience and the unbreakable spirit of Manipuri culture.

Director Lakshmipriya Devi describes Boong as an extension of her grandmother’s folktales, rooted in warmth and local traditions. She dedicates the film to the resilience of Manipur’s people and expressed gratitude that a Manipuri story is finally reaching multiplex audiences in India.

PVR INOX Pictures will distribute the film, with CEO Kamal Gianchandani affirming their commitment to showcasing diverse stories. The film’s release is expected to inspire more investment in regional cinema while expanding the visibility of Manipuri filmmakers. As Boong transitions from the global festival circuit to Indian theatres, it symbolizes a significant moment not just for Manipuri cinema but for Indian storytelling at large.
