Jana Nayagan Release Chaos: Amazon Prime Video Warns Makers of Legal Action

Thalapathy Vijay’s much-awaited farewell film Jana Nayagan has landed in unexpected controversy after its producers revealed that Amazon Prime Video warned them of possible legal action over confusion surrounding the film’s release date. The disclosure came during a hearing at the Madras High Court on January 20, where KVN Productions is locked in a legal battle with the Central Board of Film Certification over delays in issuing the censor certificate. According to the producers, Amazon expressed serious concern on December 31, stating that prolonged uncertainty could lead to contractual complications and potential legal steps. The makers claimed they were forced to approach the court after receiving no response from the CBFC between December 25 and January 5, despite repeated follow-ups.

During the hearing, senior advocate Satish Parasaran, representing KVN Productions, argued that the filmmakers were only given a communication and not a formal order, which made it impossible to challenge the decision legally. He also stated that the producers were asked to reinsert previously removed scenes before sending the film to the revising committee, calling the entire process an empty exercise that delayed the project further. The counsel emphasized that the examining committee member, who later became a complainant, had earlier supported granting the certificate, raising serious procedural concerns.

The Additional Solicitor General, appearing for the CBFC, questioned why the producers announced a January 9 release date without certification. In response, the Jana Nayagan team argued that announcing release dates before certification is a common industry practice, citing other films as examples. The Chief Justice, however, expressed concern that granting urgency to such cases could set a risky precedent. The ASG also presented a sealed complaint stating that the film allegedly contained references that could affect religious sentiments and the Army. After hearing arguments from both sides, the High Court reserved its order, effectively putting the film’s release on hold. With fans eagerly waiting for Vijay’s final appearance on screen, the outcome of this legal battle is expected to significantly influence not only Jana Nayagan but also future certification disputes in Tamil cinema.
