Raja Shivaji, starring Riteish Deshmukh in the titular role, has become the second highest-grossing Marathi film of all time in India. The film, which hit the screens on May 1, 2026, has had a strong box office performance, grossing Rs 46.95 crore within four days of release. The film, based on the life and reign of the Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, has crossed the Rs 46.12 crore lifetime earnings of Natsamrat, which had held the second spot for over a decade.
On its opening day, Raja Shivaji earned Rs 11.35 crore, followed by Rs 10.55 crore on the second day and Rs 12 crore on Sunday. On its first Monday, the film earned Rs 5.60 crore, bringing its total domestic nett collection to Rs 39.50 crore. It is now within sight of the Rs 50 crore milestone, with its impressive performance particularly driven by the Marathi version, which contributed Rs 4.25 crore on the fourth day. The film's Hindi version earned Rs 1.35 crore on the same day.
Raja Shivaji has surpassed the box office record set by Natsamrat, which grossed Rs 46.12 crore in its entire run, and is now only behind Sairat, which remains the highest-grossing Marathi film with Rs 110 crore. The film's positive reviews from both critics and audiences suggest it could continue its strong run at the box office, potentially challenging Sairat’s dominance in the Marathi film industry.
The movie’s cast also features Genelia Deshmukh, Sanjay Dutt, Abhishek Bachchan, Vidya Balan, and Bhagyashree in key roles, with a special appearance by Salman Khan. The historical drama’s success marks a significant moment for Marathi cinema, as it brings fresh attention to regional films in India. With Raja Shivaji already having a record-breaking opening, it is expected to maintain its momentum, and if it continues to perform at this pace, it might eventually break Sairat's record and become the highest-grossing Marathi film in history.
