The trailer for Boong, the first Indian film to win a BAFTA in the Best Children’s & Family Film category, has captured the attention of audiences worldwide as it prepares for its theatrical release on March 6, 2026. Written and directed by Lakshmipriya Devi, Boong tells the poignant story of a young boy's journey to reunite with his father amidst the socio-political tensions of Northeast India, particularly near the Manipur-Myanmar border. The film, backed by Excel Entertainment, Chalkboard Entertainment, and Suitable Pictures, made history at the 79th British Academy Film Awards, beating international films like Arco, Lilo & Stitch, and Zootopia 2 to claim the prestigious award.
The story follows Boong, a schoolboy from a village in Manipur, played by Gugun Kipgen. After his father has been absent for an extended period, Boong sets out with his two friends to bring him back, believing that reuniting his family would be an act of love and kindness. The film poignantly explores themes of childhood innocence, determination, and the strength of family bonds. Along the way, Boong faces numerous challenges, reflecting the harsh realities of his world, while his best friend Raju, portrayed by Angom Sanamatum, plays an important supporting role.
Set against the backdrop of the region's socio-political landscape, Boong presents a story that resonates beyond its setting, offering a universally relatable narrative about hope, resilience, and the enduring power of family. The film’s BAFTA victory has brought global attention to Indian cinema, marking a milestone in its international presence. With its return to theaters on March 6, Boong is expected to build on its previous success, offering a powerful and heartfelt cinematic experience to a broader audience.
