Amol Palekar to Receive 2026 META Lifetime Achievement Award for Theatre and Cinema Contribution
Veteran actor and filmmaker Amol Palekar will be honored with the prestigious META Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards (META), celebrating his outstanding contributions to both Indian theatre and cinema. The 21st edition of the META festival, established by the Mahindra Group and produced by Teamwork Arts, is set to take place in New Delhi from March 19 to March 25, 2026. The event will feature a week-long celebration of the best stage productions from across the country, culminating in the prestigious awards ceremony.
Throughout his illustrious career, Amol Palekar has been a defining presence in theatre, film, and television. He has reimagined the theatrical experience by moving performances beyond traditional venues like auditoriums to more unconventional spaces such as parks, terraces, canteens, and garages. In cinema, Palekar made a lasting impact during the 1970s with his portrayal of middle-class characters in films such as Chhoti Si Baat, Chitchor, Bhumika, Baaton Baaton Mein, and Gol Maal, becoming the quintessential "boy-next-door" hero. These films are still regarded as iconic in Indian cinema.
The 81-year-old actor was last seen in the crime-thriller series Farzi by Raj and DK, alongside Shahid Kapoor, Vijay Sethupathi, Raashii Khanna, and other notable actors. Palekar's influence on contemporary storytelling is evident through his contributions to both theatre and film, cementing his legacy as a true icon in the Indian entertainment industry.
For the 2026 META festival, the organizers received a record 422 submissions from theatre groups across India, representing over 20 states and more than 100 cities. These productions, presented in nearly 60 languages and dialects, will compete in 13 categories at the festival. The selected plays, which address themes such as mythology, politics, identity, and social change, will be performed at two venues in Delhi: Kamani Auditorium and Shri Ram Centre for Performing Arts. The event will conclude with the META Awards Night on March 25, 2026. The distinguished jury panel for the 2026 META Awards includes renowned figures from the theatre community, such as Amal Allana, Anuradha Kapur, Rajit Kapur, Satish Alekar, and Ila Arun.
