Karuppu, the much-anticipated film starring Suriya, has been one of the most talked-about projects in recent months, not just for its storyline but due to its repeated delays and controversies. Despite the makers' best efforts, the film's release date continues to remain uncertain, with the latest hurdles stemming from the ongoing political crisis in Tamil Nadu.
Originally slated for a Diwali release last year, Karuppu faced its first major delay when the production team was unable to complete the necessary formalities. The film’s schedule was then shifted to Pongal, but again it was delayed due to incomplete computer-generated (CG) effects. After several setbacks, the makers finally announced May 14, 2026, as the new release date, hoping that the political environment in Tamil Nadu would stabilize after the assembly elections.
However, the political turmoil surrounding the formation of the government in Tamil Nadu has cast doubt on this final release date. Vijay’s TVK party has yet to form the government, and the state is still caught in political discussions and uncertainty. Director RJ Balaji even confirmed that the trailer release was postponed due to the ongoing political situation, which further fueled speculation about whether the film will be able to release on schedule.
With just a week left until the planned release date, the uncertainty surrounding Tamil Nadu's political climate has left the makers of Karuppu in a difficult position. If the political crisis is resolved swiftly and a new government is formed in the next few days, Karuppu might make its debut on May 14. However, if the situation persists, another delay seems likely, which would be another major blow for the film, especially considering the buzz has already been dampened by the previous postponements.
Directed by RJ Balaji, Karuppu stars Suriya alongside Trisha, Indrans, Natty, Swasika, and Sshivadha. Produced by SR Prakash Babu and SR Prabhu under Dream Warrior Pictures, the film’s music is composed by Sai Abhyankkar, with cinematography by GK Vishnu and editing by R Kalaivanan.
