The Last Tenant: Sarthak Dasgupta’s Lost Short Film Featuring Irrfan Khan and Vidya Balan

Sarthak Dasgupta's long-lost short film The Last Tenant has been released on YouTube, nearly 25 years after it was shot, on the sixth death anniversary of legendary actor Irrfan Khan. The rediscovered film, which features both Irrfan and Vidya Balan, had been lost due to damaged footage. Dasgupta, who had studied engineering and finance before stepping into filmmaking, shared how his first directorial project remained unreleased for years. It wasn’t until he found an old VHS tape on the verge of being discarded that the film resurfaced.

Dasgupta reflected on how releasing this film became an emotional journey. The idea to release it came from one of his assistants, with the thought of honoring Irrfan's legacy on his death anniversary. The filmmaker, who had no formal training in cinema, was initially unsure of the film’s quality but chose to share it as a tribute. What followed was an overwhelming response from fans and critics alike.

Dasgupta’s experience working with Irrfan during the shoot of The Last Tenant is something he holds dearly. Despite being a novice, Irrfan was immensely supportive, offering patience and collaboration without ego. Vidya Balan also trusted Dasgupta’s vision, giving him the confidence to move forward as a director. The release of the film not only pays homage to an unforgettable actor but also marks a significant chapter in Dasgupta’s filmmaking journey.

The film’s unexpected success has turned it into a memorable and cathartic moment for the director. Fans have praised the film, with many expressing their admiration for Irrfan’s early performances and the timeless appeal of the short film. It serves as a reminder of the actor's unmatched talent and the lost stories of Indian cinema now being discovered and celebrated.
