Tabu turns Nagarjuna’s rival in his landmark 100th film
Nagarjuna and Tabu, one of Telugu cinema’s most memorable on-screen combinations, are preparing for a reunion with a major twist. The actors will share screen space in Nagarjuna’s landmark 100th film, tentatively referred to as King 100, but this time they will reportedly stand on opposite sides of the conflict. Tabu is playing the principal antagonist in the project, according to recent reports. The casting marks a striking departure from the romantic chemistry associated with the actors in films such as Ninne Pelladatha and Aavida Maa Aavide. Their last film together, Aavida Maa Aavide, was released in 1998, making the new project an on-screen reunion after 28 years. Directed by Ra Karthik, the film is being developed as a commercial entertainer combining action, family emotions and a strong father-daughter relationship. Reports also indicate that advanced de-aging technology will be used to present Nagarjuna’s character at different stages of his life.
Tabu returns in a powerful negative role
The biggest attraction surrounding the project is Tabu’s reported antagonist role. Instead of recreating the romantic image associated with her earlier collaborations with Nagarjuna, the film places the two stars in direct conflict. According to the Deccan Chronicle report, Nagarjuna had promised Tabu a never-before-seen character when he invited her to join his 100th film. Her role is described as substantial and dark-shaded, positioning her as one of the central forces driving the film’s conflict.
Tabu has previously demonstrated her ability to play morally complex and unpredictable characters. Her performances in films such as Maqbool and Andhadhun showed a darker side of her screen presence, making her casting as a formidable rival to Nagarjuna an intriguing choice for the milestone project. The reunion also carries strong nostalgic value. Ninne Pelladatha, released in 1996, remains one of Nagarjuna and Tabu’s most remembered romantic films, while they later appeared together in Aavida Maa Aavide in 1998. Their return as rivals offers a completely different dynamic from their earlier screen partnerships.
Nagarjuna to appear from age 25 to 60
The film reportedly follows a rags-to-riches journey while placing significant emotional focus on a father-daughter relationship. Nagarjuna’s character is expected to be shown across several stages of his life, with de-aging technology being used to present younger versions of the actor. The story reportedly tracks the character across an age range of approximately 25 to 60, allowing the narrative to explore different phases of his rise and personal life. The combination of family drama, commercial action and an extended character journey is expected to give Nagarjuna a wide-ranging role in his milestone film.
Ra Karthik is directing the project, which has generated attention because of the milestone attached to Nagarjuna’s career and the reunion with Tabu. Reports from the production have also indicated that Tabu has already participated in filming and completed a shooting schedule for the project. While King 100 is widely being used as the working or tentative title in reports, further official information about the final title, complete cast and release plans is still awaited.
Tabu balances King 100 with SlumDog
Alongside Nagarjuna’s 100th film, Tabu is also part of SlumDog: 33 Temple Road, starring Vijay Sethupathi and directed by Puri Jagannadh. She plays a police officer in the action thriller, which also features Samyuktha and Duniya Vijay in key roles. The two projects offer contrasting spaces for the actor. While SlumDog presents her in a law-enforcement role, Nagarjuna’s 100th film reportedly casts her as the central antagonist, adding another darker character to her recent lineup.
For Telugu audiences, however, the biggest attraction is likely to be seeing Nagarjuna and Tabu together again after nearly three decades. Instead of returning as a romantic pair, the stars are reportedly set for a face-off that could become one of the defining elements of Nagarjuna’s landmark film. With Tabu’s powerful negative role, Nagarjuna’s multi-age character arc and Ra Karthik’s mix of family emotions and commercial drama, the project is building curiosity well before its theatrical release plans are formally announced.
