Pradeep Rawat Dies at 74; Tollywood Mourns Bikshu Yadav

Veteran actor Pradeep Rawat, remembered as Bikshu Yadav from Sye, died in Mumbai at the age of 74 following a relapse of cancer. The actor leaves behind a four-decade legacy featuring memorable performances in Telugu, Hindi, Tamil and other Indian-language films.

Pradeep Rawat Dies At 74

Veteran actor Pradeep Rawat, celebrated for his commanding villain roles across Telugu, Hindi, Tamil and other Indian film industries, died in Mumbai on Tuesday, August 4, 2026. He was 74. His manager, Siddharth Tiwari, said the actor had been hospitalised after cancer returned and that his health worsened following a sudden fall in his platelet count. Rawat died between approximately 6:00 PM and 6:30 PM.

The news left film fans mourning an actor whose screen presence could turn even a supporting antagonist into one of a movie’s most memorable characters. Reports that he died of cardiac arrest are not supported by the manager’s account, which identified a cancer relapse as the cause. Actor Yashpal Sharma, who worked with Rawat in Lagaan, was among those who confirmed the news and paid tribute.

Bikshu Yadav Made Him A Telugu Cinema Icon

For Telugu audiences, Rawat will always be closely associated with Bikshu Yadav, the ruthless antagonist in SS Rajamouli’s 2004 sports drama Sye. The movie marked his Telugu cinema debut and established him as one of the industry’s most recognisable screen villains. His intense performance and distinctive dialogue delivery earned widespread appreciation, including the Filmfare Award for Best Villain in Telugu.

Following Sye, Rawat became a familiar presence in major Telugu productions. He appeared in films including Chatrapathi, Stalin, Desamuduru, Rajanna, Naayak, 1: Nenokkadine, Alludu Seenu, Sarrainodu, Baadshah, Ragada, Baladur, Poola Rangadu and Aadavallu Meeku Johaarlu. His final Telugu release was the 2026 film Gaayapadda Simham.

Mahabharat To Ghajini: A Career Across Industries

Born on January 21, 1952, in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, Rawat built a career that extended well beyond villain roles in commercial cinema. One of his earliest widely remembered performances was Ashwatthama in BR Chopra’s landmark television series Mahabharat. The role introduced him to households across India before he became a familiar face on the big screen.

In Hindi cinema, Rawat appeared in Aitbaar and Meri Jung in 1985 before taking roles in films such as Sarfarosh, Lagaan, Koyla, The Hero: Love Story of a Spy, Deewaar and Ghajini. His work in the Tamil version of Ghajini and its Hindi adaptation further strengthened his image as a formidable antagonist capable of holding his own opposite major stars.

Indian Cinema Remembers A Powerful Screen Villain

Rawat’s ability to portray menace without losing the individuality of a character made him a dependable choice for filmmakers across languages. Whether playing Bikshu Yadav in Sye, Deva in Lagaan or the title villain in Ghajini, he brought physical intensity, a forceful voice and an unmistakable personality to the screen.

His death closes a career spanning more than four decades across television and cinema. For Telugu moviegoers, the name Bikshu Yadav remains inseparable from Pradeep Rawat, while audiences across India will remember the many characters through which he transformed the conventional villain into a lasting part of popular cinema.
