Dulquer Salmaan returns as the lead in I’m Game, a gambling thriller directed by RDX filmmaker Nahas Hidhayath. The five-language release could deliver an important Malayalam theatrical success for the actor after several uneven box-office results.

Dulquer Salmaan is returning to theatres with I’m Game, an ambitious Malayalam thriller scheduled to release on September 3. The film will arrive simultaneously in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Kannada, giving it access to a wider pan-India audience.

Directed by Nahas Hidhayath, who previously made the action entertainer RDX, the film presents Dulquer in a commercially driven role. He plays Dan John, a confident gambler who uses an algorithm to predict outcomes and place bets on cricket matches.

Dan initially believes that data gives him control over chance. However, his life begins to unravel when the system stops working in his favour. The trailer suggests a fast-paced combination of gambling, crime, action, humour and emotional conflict as the protagonist struggles with the consequences of his choices.

The movie was initially expected to arrive on August 20 before being rescheduled to September 3. It is produced by Dulquer’s Wayfarer Films, making the project personally important to him as both its lead actor and producer.

Dulquer continues to receive appreciation for his performances and willingness to work across industries. However, the commercial results of his recent films have varied, making I’m Game an important release in his career.

King of Kotha arrived in 2023 as an ambitious Malayalam gangster drama backed by considerable expectations. Despite its scale and strong advance attention, the film lost momentum after its initial opening and did not deliver the sustained theatrical performance its team had anticipated.

The 2025 Tamil period drama Kaantha received a more positive response for Dulquer’s portrayal of a rising cinema star from the 1950s. Reviews recognised his performance, but the appreciation reportedly did not translate into the box-office numbers required for a clear theatrical success.

This pattern has created greater interest in I’m Game. The question is not about Dulquer’s acting range but whether the new film can combine his performance with an engaging story, positive word of mouth and sustained ticket sales.

Lucky Baskhar demonstrated Dulquer’s ability to lead a major commercial success. Directed by Venky Atluri, the 2024 Telugu drama featured him as an ordinary bank employee drawn into a risky financial scheme.

The film reportedly crossed ₹100 crore worldwide and later attracted a significant streaming audience. Its success showed that Dulquer could connect with viewers beyond his core Malayalam fan base when supported by a strong character and accessible storytelling.

Lokah Chapter One: Chandra also became a major Malayalam theatrical success. Dulquer was primarily associated with the film as a producer and appeared in a supporting role, rather than leading the narrative. The movie strengthened the position of Wayfarer Films, but it was not considered a lead-actor success for him.

I’m Game therefore provides a fresh opportunity for Dulquer to deliver a Malayalam hit with his character at the centre. Its multilingual strategy also builds on the wider recognition he gained through films such as Lucky Baskhar.

I’m Game has several factors working in its favour. The gambling-and-algorithm premise offers a clear hook, while the trailer presents the film as a stylish commercial thriller rather than a conventional star vehicle.

Nahas Hidhayath’s previous success with RDX has raised expectations for the action portions. Jakes Bejoy, who has worked with Dulquer on earlier projects, is composing the music and background score.

The five-language rollout could help the movie attract audiences in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Hindi-speaking markets. Its ultimate performance, however, will depend on reviews, audience response and word of mouth after the opening shows.

For Dulquer, I’m Game represents more than another experiment across languages. It gives him a chance to combine an unusual character, a high-concept story and mainstream entertainment within a Malayalam production. If those elements connect with audiences, the gamble could result in the theatrical comeback his fans have been waiting for.
