Digger Trailer Casts Tom Cruise as Villain-Turned-Saviour

The final trailer for Tom Cruise’s Digger has been released, offering a chaotic new look at the eccentric oil tycoon Digger Rockwell and the global disaster linked to his drilling operation. Directed by Alejandro G Iñárritu, the film combines large-scale action, dark humour and political satire. Cruise plays a powerful businessman who is publicly blamed for triggering a catastrophe but remains convinced that he is the only person capable of preventing an even greater crisis.

The trailer positions Digger as both the central villain and the possible saviour of the story. His confidence grows even as public anger, political pressure and the scale of the devastation close in around him. Digger will be released in cinemas and IMAX across India on October 2, 2026, with Warner Bros Pictures handling distribution.

Digger trailer unleashes a global drilling disaster

The trailer opens with Digger Rockwell at the centre of an enormous crisis connected to one of his drilling projects. The operation appears to trigger a tsunami, unleashing widespread destruction and a fictional casualty count reaching hundreds of thousands. As the consequences become clear, Digger faces condemnation from the public and pressure from influential political figures. He is identified as the man responsible for the disaster, turning the famous businessman into a global symbol of greed and recklessness.

Digger, however, refuses to accept the role of a defeated villain. Instead of withdrawing, he takes control of the response and claims that he possesses the knowledge and resources needed to save the world. This contradiction drives the trailer: the man accused of causing the disaster may also be humanity’s best chance of surviving it. Whether he is genuinely trying to correct his actions or protect his reputation remains deliberately unclear.

Tom Cruise embraces an eccentric antihero role

Cruise appears in a dramatically different role from the heroic action characters usually associated with his career. Digger Rockwell is presented as arrogant, unpredictable and convinced of his own importance.

His attempts to portray himself as a global rescuer unfold alongside mounting evidence that his decisions may have caused the crisis. That tension allows the film to explore corporate power, public manipulation and the dangers of allowing one individual to control systems with worldwide consequences.

The line “We trust Digger” captures the film’s absurd tone. Powerful people caught in the escalating disaster appear willing to depend on the same tycoon they blame for creating it. The trailer moves between destruction, tense meetings and darkly comic moments, suggesting that Digger will use satire to question the cult of personality surrounding business leaders and self-proclaimed visionaries. Cruise’s performance appears intentionally exaggerated without becoming a complete caricature. His character’s confidence remains unshaken, even when the world around him descends into panic.

Digger cast adds weight to Iñárritu’s satire

Cruise leads an ensemble cast featuring Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg and Jesse Plemons. Robert John Burke, Emma D’Arcy, Burn Gorman and Sophie Wilde also appear in the film. The supporting characters seem to represent the politicians, advisers, scientists and institutional figures attempting to manage the disaster. Their relationships with Digger could determine whether he is restrained, trusted or allowed to lead the response.

Iñárritu co-wrote the screenplay with Alexander Dinelaris, Nicolás Giacobone and Sabina Berman. The story was developed by Iñárritu and Berman. The film is produced by Iñárritu, Mary Parent, Tom Cruise and Michael Sharp. It marks another ambitious project for the director after critically acclaimed films such as Birdman and The Revenant. The filmmaker’s interest in human ego, power and survival appears central to Digger. The final trailer suggests that the film will examine those themes through the framework of a visually spectacular disaster movie.

VistaVision and IMAX promise large-scale spectacle

Digger was filmed entirely in VistaVision, giving the production a wider visual canvas for its drilling sites, tsunami sequences and scenes of worldwide destruction. Iñárritu has reunited with Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, whose work is expected to provide the film with an immersive visual identity. Long-time collaborator Stephen Mirrione serves as editor.

Dennis Gassner is the production designer, while Jacqueline West has created the costumes. The experienced technical team points towards a film designed as much for cinematic scale as for character-driven satire. Its IMAX release is likely to emphasise the disaster sequences and the contrast between Digger’s personality and the massive consequences of his actions.

The final trailer avoids clearly identifying whether Digger will redeem himself. Instead, it leaves audiences with a provocative question: can the person responsible for a catastrophe also become the one who saves everyone. That uncertainty, combined with Cruise’s eccentric performance and Iñárritu’s satirical approach, has positioned Digger as one of the most unusual Hollywood releases of October 2026.
