Maargan : Latest Pan India Movie Review

Plot:
Maargan follows Dhruv (Vijay Antony), an ADGP in Mumbai who is devastated by the murder of his daughter by a serial killer. He soon learns of another similar case in Chennai and transfers there unofficially to investigate. The killer uses a drug that blackens the skin of the victim, and as Dhruv dives deeper into the investigation, he narrows down the suspect to Tamilarivu (Ajay Dhishan), a swimmer. The plot thickens with supernatural elements, ancient sages, and a criminal whose motives remain unclear until the final reveal.

Overview:

  • Genre: Crime Thriller, Investigative Drama

  • Release Date: June 27, 2025

  • Director: Leo John Paul

  • Cast: Vijay Antony, Ajay Dhishan, and others

  • Music: Vijay Antony

  • Runtime: 2 Hours 12 Minutes

Performances:

  • Vijay Antony as Dhruv performs well in his role as a grief-stricken, determined cop. His emotional depth is evident, especially in scenes relating to his daughter’s murder.

  • Ajay Dhishan as Tamilarivu adds a supernatural twist to his character, with his portrayal of a man with great memory powers bringing intrigue to the investigation.

  • Supporting cast also deliver decent performances, though the narrative doesn’t allow for much character depth or engagement.

Technical Aspects:

  • Direction: Leo John Paul’s direction falters, especially when it comes to building suspense and engagement. The blend of crime thriller with supernatural elements is intriguing but underdeveloped.

  • Staging: The staging feels artificial, and the thriller fails to live up to its potential due to a lack of genuine excitement or gripping moments.

  • Editing: The editing by Leo John Paul himself doesn’t provide the required edge-of-the-seat tension, and some parts of the film feel stretched.

Music:

  • Vijay Antony’s music is one of the few redeeming factors of Maargan. The background score helps build suspense in moments where the screenplay fails to do so. The music is effective in setting the tone, especially during intense scenes.

Positives:

  1. Intriguing Premise: The crime thriller with supernatural elements offers a fresh angle but fails in execution.

  2. Vijay Antony’s Performance: As Dhruv, he plays the grief-stricken father well, adding depth to the character.

  3. Ajay Dhishan’s Role: His portrayal of Tamilarivu adds an interesting layer to the investigation.

  4. Music: Vijay Antony’s background score elevates some of the suspenseful moments.

Negatives:

  1. Lack of Thrill: Despite its promising premise, Maargan doesn’t manage to keep the audience on the edge of their seats.

  2. Weak Execution of Supernatural Elements: The supernatural angle is underdeveloped and fails to make the film engaging.

  3. Cliched Storytelling: The portrayal of characters, especially those from Dharavi, feels too clichéd and could have been more nuanced.

  4. Artificial Staging: The film doesn’t feel authentic, with the story and clues feeling contrived rather than naturally unfolding.

Analysis:
Maargan had the potential to be a gripping crime thriller with a fresh supernatural twist, but its execution falls short. The film struggles to build suspense and fails to provide the excitement that a thriller should offer. While Vijay Antony delivers a solid performance, and the music helps create some moments of tension, the film’s pacing and weak supernatural explanation let it down. The script doesn’t engage with the audience as much as it should, and the character development is superficial.

Bottomline: Missed Opportunity

Rating: 2.5/5
