The Fantastic Four: First Steps follows Marvel's iconic superhero team four years after they gain cosmic powers during a space expedition. As they navigate life and responsibilities, they are faced with an existential threat Galactus, a cosmic entity who consumes planets. Galactus demands Reed Richards and Sue Storm hand over their unborn child in exchange for Earth’s safety. Why he wants the child, whether the Fantastic Four comply, and how they battle Galactus with the help of Silver Surfer forms the emotional and action-packed core of this sci-fi adventure.
Directed by Matt Shakman, produced by Kevin Feige, and released under Marvel Studios, this reboot aims to reintroduce the Fantastic Four to modern audiences. Rather than diving into a multiverse-heavy narrative, the film keeps things standalone, making it accessible to newcomers and long-time fans alike. It blends family emotion, sci-fi spectacle, and comic-book heritage into an engaging narrative.
Michael Giacchino delivers an evocative score, particularly enhancing key action and emotional scenes. The music during the alien planet sequence and childbirth scene adds intensity and emotion to the storytelling.
Editing keeps the film coherent and accessible, but the first half feels slightly slow. The second half picks up with action and emotional high points, leading to a well-balanced climax.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps succeeds in simplifying the superhero formula by focusing on human emotions particularly parental love over convoluted multiverse plots. It works well as a family-driven superhero drama, showcasing relatable dilemmas within an extraordinary setup. While the film delivers visually and emotionally, the absence of tense, pulse-pounding moments takes away from its blockbuster potential. Nevertheless, it is a solid reboot with an interesting cliffhanger and a confirmed return in Avengers: Doomsday (2026).
