Coolie : Latest Pan India Movie Review

Coolie : Latest Pan India Movie Review

Plot:
Coolie follows Deva (Rajinikanth), a man who investigates the mysterious death of his friend, Rajasekhar (Sathyaraj). As Deva digs deeper, he uncovers connections to a smuggling syndicate headed by Simon (Nagarjuna) and the exploitation of workers led by Dayalan (Soubin Shahir). The story becomes a blend of revenge and crime exposé as Deva unravels hidden truths and confronts the criminal underworld.

Overview:
Despite the high anticipation and an impressive ensemble cast, Coolie struggles to live up to expectations. Director Lokesh Kanagaraj, known for his unique style, fails to create a cohesive narrative. The film starts with a solid revenge premise but quickly devolves into a muddled mess of subplots, underdeveloped characters, and disjointed storytelling. Rajinikanth’s charisma is the saving grace, but the film’s execution does not justify the hype.

Performances:

  • Rajinikanth: His screen presence remains strong as ever, and his charismatic performance continues to captivate the audience, but it doesn’t elevate the story.
  • Shruti Haasan: As Preethi, Rajasekhar’s daughter, Shruti delivers one of her most impactful performances.
  • Soubin Shahir: His character has potential, but his arc is underexplored.
  • Nagarjuna: His portrayal of Simon is stylish but one-dimensional. His performance lacks depth.
  • Supporting Cast: Kanna Ravi and Rachitha Ram give memorable performances despite limited screen time.

Technical Aspects:

  • Cinematography (Girish Gangadharan): Visually appealing with slick shots, but it doesn't fully capture the narrative’s essence.
  • VFX: High quality and noticeable in action sequences.
  • Production Design: Well-executed, but the grandeur is overshadowed by the weak plot.

Music:
Anirudh Ravichander: The soundtrack is energetic and complements the high-octane sequences, but at times, it feels disconnected from the film’s core tone. The music plays a crucial role in building the film’s energy but doesn’t always mesh with the pacing.

Editing:
The editing fails to streamline the film’s excessive subplots. The narrative feels choppy, and the transitions between sequences are often jarring.

Positives:

  • Rajinikanth's performance, screen presence, and star power.
  • Technically solid with strong cinematography, VFX, and music.
  • Shruti Haasan’s standout performance.

Negatives:

  • Overstuffed narrative with too many subplots.
  • Disjointed storytelling and weak character development.
  • Cameos, including Aamir Khan and Upendra, fail to make an impact.
  • Lack of cohesion in the second half, detracting from emotional engagement.

Analysis:
While Coolie offers a lot of potential with its ensemble cast and action-packed narrative, it falters due to its inability to focus. The story’s lack of clarity and overstuffed subplots cause the film to feel bloated. The characters, although interesting, are underused, and the lack of proper development hinders the emotional impact. Rajinikanth’s charm is the only redeeming feature, but it’s not enough to carry the film past its glaring flaws.

Bottomline: Missed opportunity

Rating: 2.5/5
