Meenu (Vismaya Mohanlal) lives a peaceful life with her father in a remote Kerala hill village. Her sudden disappearance triggers a police investigation, but what initially appears to be a missing-person case soon turns into a dangerous confrontation involving a brutal contract killer. As Meenu fights back, the film transforms from a restrained investigative thriller into an action-driven survival story.
Director Jude Anthany Joseph’s Thudakkam serves both as a thriller and as the acting launch of Vismaya Mohanlal. The first half relies effectively on atmosphere, mystery and emotional tension, while the second half moves towards larger action moments designed around its debutante. Despite some screenplay conveniences, the film remains engaging because of its performances, technical quality and strong women-centric theme.
Vismaya Mohanlal makes a confident debut as Meenu and shows strong screen presence, particularly during the confrontational sequences. Though there are a few rough edges in her performance, she handles the physically demanding portions convincingly.
Ashish Joe Antony makes a strong impact as the antagonist and brings genuine menace to the role. Sai Kumar adds emotional depth as Meenu’s worried father, while the supporting cast effectively strengthens the investigative portions.
Mohanlal’s appearances provide strong theatrical moments, although his climax presence occasionally shifts attention away from Meenu’s journey.
The technical department is one of Thudakkam’s biggest strengths. Cinematographers Jomon T John, Akhil George and Sudeep Elamon effectively use darkness, thunderstorms, confined spaces and lighting to build suspense.
The action and confrontation sequences are captured with fluid camerawork, while the hill-village setting strengthens the film’s tense atmosphere.
Jakes Bejoy’s background score plays an important role in maintaining suspense and intensity. The music effectively complements both the investigative portions and the film’s action-heavy second half without overwhelming the scenes.
Chaman Chakko keeps the narrative moving at a brisk pace. The first half benefits particularly from controlled editing and gradual tension-building. However, the second half contains several developments that feel rushed, limiting the emotional impact of some important moments.
Thudakkam works best when it stays grounded and allows its mystery, atmosphere and characters to drive the narrative. The opening half establishes Meenu naturally while gradually building tension around her disappearance.
The film also makes meaningful observations about victim-blaming, public perception and the pressure women face after traumatic incidents. Instead of presenting its female protagonist simply as a victim, the story allows her to confront the threat herself.
However, the second half increasingly behaves like a star-launch vehicle. Larger-than-life moments, convenient developments and commercial elevations reduce some of the realism established earlier.
Vismaya Mohanlal nevertheless makes an encouraging debut and proves capable of carrying demanding action sequences. Combined with strong cinematography, background music and an effective antagonist, Thudakkam emerges as a solid thriller despite its screenplay inconsistencies.
