Athiradi Review: Basil Joseph and Tovino Thomas Deliver Heartfelt Campus Drama

Athiradi Review: Basil Joseph and Tovino Thomas Deliver Heartfelt Campus Drama

Plot:
Athiradi follows Samkutty (Basil Joseph), who joins BCET College to revive the Arohan fest after a deadly stampede shut it down years earlier. His personal mission intertwines with his elder brother’s lingering guilt, forming the emotional core. The story also focuses on Sreekuttan (Tovino Thomas), a reformed local don whose presence challenges Samkutty’s goal, injecting conflict, humour, and nostalgia.

Overview:
Directed by Arun Anirudhan, Athiradi is a coming-of-age campus drama that balances humour, emotional threads, and youthful chaos. While uneven writing affects pacing, the film succeeds in capturing the warmth of college life, friendships, and festival politics, evoking nostalgia and authenticity.

Performances:

  • Basil Joseph – Natural and relatable as Samkutty, blending awkwardness with charm.
  • Tovino Thomas – Commands presence as Sreekuttan, though character predictability lessens tension.
  • Riya Shibu – Underwritten role as Swathi; quiet scenes add subtle depth but remain limited.
  • Supporting Cast – Vineeth Sreenivasan, Shaan Rahman, and others inject humour and energy, especially in exaggerated self-portrayals.

Technical Aspects:

  • Cinematography: Samuel Henry captures youthful energy, especially during fest sequences.
  • Editing: Chaman Chakko delivers effective pacing for chaotic moments, though some transitions feel over-stylized.
  • Production Design: Accurate college and festival environments enhance immersion.

Music:
Vishnu Vijay’s score supports the film’s humour and energy, particularly during Sreekuttan’s entrances. At times, the music overshadows subtle emotional beats, but overall it complements the lively campus atmosphere.

Editing:
Editing handles multi-threaded storytelling well in high-energy sequences. Some intercut sequences feel borrowed from films like Thallumaala and Aavesham, occasionally disrupting rhythm.

Positives:

  • Strong emotional core centered on brothers’ bond.
  • Humour and nostalgia resonate authentically.
  • Ensemble cast delivers solid performances.
  • Captures festival and college atmosphere convincingly.

Negatives:

  • Uneven writing affects pacing and character depth.
  • Some characters, like Sreekuttan and Swathi, are underutilized or predictable.
  • Over-stylized sequences distract from story immersion.

Analysis:
Athiradi succeeds as a heartfelt coming-of-age story despite flaws in writing and predictability. Its charm lies in authentic emotional threads, nostalgic college vibes, and a mix of humour and drama. The film resonates most in theatre settings with its lively fest sequences.

Bottomline: Heartfelt, uneven

Rating: 3.5/10
