Korean Kanakaraju is set against the backdrop of Penukonda. The story begins when a vessel carrying the ashes of a Korean man reaches the town from Korea. Kanakaraju accidentally consumes the ashes after mixing them with liquor and soon becomes possessed by a mysterious spirit.
The film then explores the identity of the ghost, its connection with Korea and the unusual circumstances that eventually take Kanakaraju to Korea.
Korean Kanakaraju is a horror-comedy starring Varun Tej in a dual-shaded role. Director Merlapaka Gandhi attempts to combine rural comedy, supernatural elements and a Korea-based storyline.
The film succeeds mainly because of its comedy portions, particularly Satya's performance, but predictable storytelling and convenient writing prevent it from becoming a consistently entertaining horror-comedy.
Varun Tej appears in two different shades as the massy Kanakaraju in Penukonda and as the ghost-possessed character during the Korea portions. He handles both roles comfortably and puts noticeable effort into the action sequences and dance numbers.
Satya is the major highlight of Korean Kanakaraju. His comic timing, expressions and one-liners generate some of the film's biggest laughs.
Ritika Nayak delivers a decent performance, although her character does not receive enough scope. Sunil, Srinivas Avasarala, Muralidhar Goud, VT Ganesh, Bulli Raju, Chinna and Tulasi appear in supporting roles and perform adequately.
Director Merlapaka Gandhi comes up with an interesting Penukonda-to-Korea setup, but the screenplay struggles with predictability. The unusual geographical connection gives the film some freshness, while several village, romance and supernatural portions feel familiar.
Manoj Reddy Katasani's cinematography is functional, but the visual presentation does not consistently elevate the movie. The production values are adequate, although some portions, especially the climax VFX, could have been more polished.
Thaman's soundtrack does not make a strong impression, with "Kamsahamida" being one of the comparatively better numbers.
The background score works effectively during certain Korea sequences and around the interval. However, repeated use of similar musical themes reduces its impact as the film progresses.
The editing is uneven. Several comedy sequences are entertaining, but the film takes too long to reach its central conflict.
With a runtime of around 2 hours and 45 minutes, tighter editing and a faster establishment of the ghost's story could have improved the overall viewing experience.
Korean Kanakaraju has an interesting idea at its core, particularly the connection between Penukonda and Korea. However, the screenplay does not fully capitalise on the novelty of the premise.
The initial village conflicts and romantic portions follow familiar commercial-film patterns, while the central supernatural story takes considerable time to begin. Things improve considerably around the pre-interval section, especially with the dog and graveyard comedy sequences.
The interval creates expectations for a stronger second half, but predictability once again becomes a major issue. The Korea portions, the Srinivas Avasarala-related twist and some supporting tracks fail to deliver the expected impact.
Satya repeatedly comes to the film's rescue with his comedy timing and funny one-liners. Varun Tej also gives an energetic performance, but performances alone cannot completely compensate for the inconsistent writing.
Overall, Korean Kanakaraju works better as a comedy entertainer than as a well-written horror-comedy. Audiences looking primarily for laughs may find enough entertaining moments, but those expecting a gripping supernatural story may be disappointed.
