One Night Only Review: Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner Shine in Rom-Com

One Night Only Review: Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner Shine in Rom-Com

Plot

Allie, played by Monica Barbaro, and Owen, played by Callum Turner, are two strangers navigating New York during the only night of the year when premarital sex is legally allowed.

Like everyone around them, they enter the night with expectations of romance, intimacy or at least an unforgettable experience. However, their plans quickly spiral out of control as misunderstandings, strange encounters and increasingly ridiculous situations keep pushing them together.

As businesses, strangers and the entire city treat the annual event as completely normal, Allie and Owen attempt to understand each other while surviving the madness around them.

What starts as a search for a one-night connection gradually develops into something more meaningful, giving the otherwise outrageous comedy an emotional centre.

Overview

One Night Only is a 102-minute romantic comedy starring Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner. Released in theatres on August 21, 2026, the film imagines a bizarre society where premarital sex is legally permitted on only one night each year.

Instead of seriously explaining its unusual world, the movie embraces the absurdity and follows two strangers through a chaotic night in New York filled with romance, misunderstandings, celebrity cameos and unpredictable comic situations.

Performances

Monica Barbaro is charming and confident as Allie. She handles the film's bizarre situations naturally and gives her character enough personality to stand out amid the relentless comedy.

Callum Turner complements her well as Owen. His awkwardness, confusion and understated comic reactions make several situations funnier without forcing the humour.

The chemistry between Barbaro and Turner is one of the movie's biggest strengths. Their connection prevents the film from becoming merely a collection of unrelated sketches.

The movie also includes numerous celebrity appearances and pop-culture references. Pete Davidson, Bobby Cannavale, Julia Fox, Nicholas Braun, Mike Birbiglia, Jay Ellis, Flavor Flav, Este Haim and Ziwe are among the familiar faces appearing throughout the story. Many of these appearances are deliberately brief, making them feel like part of the joke rather than conventional star cameos.

Technical Aspects

The biggest technical strength of One Night Only is the way it builds a colourful, chaotic version of New York around its unusual premise.

The film maintains a lively visual tone that suits its broad comedy. Crowded locations, nighttime streets and exaggerated situations create the feeling of an entire city participating in one massive annual event.

The screenplay keeps introducing new characters, situations and visual jokes at a rapid pace. While this provides energy, the film rarely gives itself enough time to explore the more interesting implications of its fictional society.

The world-building is entertaining but somewhat shallow. A government regulating personal relationships could have provided stronger social satire, but the film prefers comedy over deeper commentary.

Music

The music largely supports the energetic and romantic atmosphere rather than becoming a major attraction by itself. Upbeat cues work effectively during the chaotic New York sequences, while softer moments help strengthen the developing connection between Allie and Owen.

The soundtrack complements the film's fast-moving style, though there are no major musical moments that dominate the overall experience.

Editing

Editing plays an important role in maintaining the film's frantic comic rhythm. Jokes, cameos and unexpected encounters arrive quickly, keeping the energy high for much of the runtime.

However, the movie occasionally becomes too determined to deliver another punchline before the previous one has fully landed.

At 102 minutes, some comic detours begin to feel stretched. A tighter runtime of around 90 minutes could have made the comedy sharper and reduced the repetitive portions.

The film works best when the editing allows Barbaro and Turner enough space to develop their chemistry instead of immediately moving toward another gag.

Positives
  • Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner's chemistry
  • Highly original and absurd premise
  • Several genuinely funny situations
  • Energetic New York setting
  • Self-aware humour
  • Entertaining celebrity cameos
  • Fast-paced comic moments
  • Surprisingly charming romantic core
Negatives
  • Interesting social themes remain unexplored
  • Too many jokes packed into certain portions
  • Some sequences feel like extended comedy sketches
  • Celebrity cameos occasionally distract from the story
  • World-building lacks depth
  • Runtime feels slightly stretched
  • Not every joke lands effectively
Analysis

One Night Only succeeds primarily because it completely understands how ridiculous its own premise is. A society allowing premarital intimacy for only one night every year could easily have become an overly complicated dystopian satire. Instead, the filmmakers treat the bizarre law as an accepted part of everyday life and build the comedy around how people prepare for and react to the annual event.

That commitment to absurdity creates some of the movie's funniest moments. Businesses prepare for the night, people plan their romantic encounters and strangers behave as though this unusual event is completely ordinary.

The humour becomes even more effective because most characters treat ridiculous situations seriously.

At the centre of all this madness are Allie and Owen. Their relationship gives the film emotional stability. Monica Barbaro's confident presence combines well with Callum Turner's awkward charm, allowing their chemistry to carry the narrative whenever the comedy becomes excessive.

The numerous celebrity appearances add another layer of unpredictability. Many arrive without warning and disappear just as quickly, turning recognisable faces into visual punchlines.

However, the screenplay misses an opportunity to explore its premise more deeply. Questions involving government control, personal freedom, dating culture and bodily autonomy are present beneath the surface but rarely receive serious attention.

The film clearly prefers jokes to social commentary, which works for viewers expecting a broad romantic comedy but may disappoint those hoping for sharper satire.

Another issue is pacing. The filmmakers sometimes appear unwilling to allow even a quiet moment without introducing another joke, cameo or strange encounter. This results in certain sections feeling overloaded.

Still, enough of the humour works to keep the experience enjoyable. One Night Only may not be particularly profound, but it is energetic, knowingly silly and surprisingly warm. It works best when viewed as an outrageous rom-com rather than a serious dystopian satire.
