Overview: Lucky Baskhar, directed by Venky Atluri, has been highly anticipated due to the presence of Dulquer Salmaan in the lead. Set in 1980s Mumbai, the film takes viewers on a thrilling ride through the banking sector and stock market's darker sides. Let’s dive in to see if it lives up to its hype.

Storyline:

The film follows Bhaskar (Dulquer Salmaan), a dedicated bank employee overlooked for promotion. Disillusioned, Bhaskar decides to rob his own bank, using the funds to dabble in risky, illegal ventures. His newfound wealth fuels his ambition, leading him to join forces with Harsha Mehra, a prominent stock market figure. Together, they accumulate wealth on a massive scale. However, as Bhaskar’s criminal activities come under the scrutiny of the CBI, he finds himself entangled in a dangerous game that threatens his relationship with his wife (Meenakshi Chaudhary) and forces him to face serious repercussions. The story unfolds as Bhaskar attempts to clear his name amid the high-stakes financial scandal.

Plus Points:

Dulquer Salmaan’s presence brings an undeniable charm to the film, and his performance as Bhaskar is remarkable. Director Venky Atluri’s writing shines, delivering a thrilling story with sharp twists, strong emotional beats, and suspense. The film’s banking and stock market references are skillfully simplified for the audience, making it accessible and engaging without becoming overly technical.

The first half expertly sets up Bhaskar's struggle and his eventual descent into criminality. The second half delves into high-stakes trading with well-integrated references to the Harshad Mehta stock scam, adding realism to the plot. Dulquer’s controlled performance adds depth, bringing out Bhaskar’s ambition, charm, and vulnerability. Meenakshi Chaudhary excels as his wife, portraying a mix of support and growing tension as Bhaskar’s actions escalate. Supporting roles by Sai Kumar and Sachin Khedekar enhance the film’s impact. The climax offers a satisfying resolution to Bhaskar’s complex journey.

Drawbacks:

While the financial backdrop is intriguing, audiences may feel a sense of familiarity as similar themes have been explored in Hindi web series. The second half could benefit from a tighter pace, and some viewers may find the family drama underplayed, as Bhaskar’s wife doesn’t question his sudden wealth enough. Although the pacing slows slightly in the latter half, it is compensated by a gripping climax.

Technical Aspects:

GV Prakash Kumar’s music enhances the film, with songs blending seamlessly into the story. The background score is impactful, and the production design captures 1980s Mumbai with stunning detail, from the bank sets to the street scenes. Nimish Ravi’s cinematography adds vibrance, while Navin Nooli’s editing is crisp, though a few scenes could have been trimmed to maintain momentum. Venky Atluri’s direction is commendable, skillfully balancing the complex narrative with strong emotional connections. Casting Dulquer as Bhaskar was an inspired choice, as he embodies the role effortlessly.

Verdict:

Lucky Baskhar offers a thrilling watch with a unique financial backdrop, compelling storytelling, and stellar performances. Despite a slightly slow pace in the second half, it’s an engaging film for the festive season, showcasing an exhilarating story with Dulquer Salmaan at his best.
