Kaantha : Latest Pan India Movie Review

Kaantha : Latest Pan India Movie Review

Plot:
“Kaantha” is a Tamil period drama set in the 1970s, focusing on star hero T.K. Mahadevan (Dulquer Salmaan) and his growing ego conflicts with Ayya (Samuthirakani), his mentor who helped him rise to fame. The story also revolves around Kumari (Bhagyashri), whose perspective adds a fresh angle. The film portrays ambition, pride, and personal sacrifices in the golden era of cinema while exploring how ego and fame can affect relationships and careers.

Overview:
After years of production delays since its announcement in 2019, “Kaantha” finally releases in 2025. Directed by Selvamani Selvaraj, the film stands out with retro-style promos and a period-specific narrative. Made in Tamil and dubbed into Telugu, it appeals to audiences who enjoy nostalgic storytelling blended with strong performances and cinematic visuals.

Performances:

  • Dulquer Salmaan delivers a commanding and nuanced performance, highlighted by a single-take mirror scene.
  • Samuthirakani impresses with controlled anger and emotional depth.
  • Rana Daggubati supports the film with sharp dialogue delivery and screen presence.
  • Bhagyashri looks the part in retro styling but is less effective in emotional sequences.
  • Ravindra Vijay and the supporting cast maintain consistency, enriching the narrative.

Technical Aspects:

  • Cinematography by Dani Sanchez Lopez is visually stunning, with every frame resembling a painting.
  • Lighting and color grading recreate the authentic 1970s studio environment.
  • Art and production design accurately depict retro filmmaking culture.
  • Some CGI shots, especially green/blue matte work, are noticeable and could be improved.

Music:

  • Jakes Bejoy’s background score effectively elevates the emotional moments.
  • Songs by Jhanu Chanthar are melodious and blend well with the period setting, enhancing the storytelling.

Editing:

  • Edited by Llewellyn Anthony Gonzalez, the film maintains narrative flow but suffers slightly in pacing during the second half.
  • The climax is impactful, anchored by Dulquer Salmaan’s strong performance.

Positives:

  • Dulquer Salmaan’s performance is exceptional and scene-stealing.
  • Samuthirakani and Rana Daggubati add depth to the story.
  • Cinematography and visuals are breathtaking.
  • Authentic depiction of 1970s studio culture.
  • Well-crafted direction and story.

Negatives:

  • Heavy Tamil dialogues reduce clarity in the Telugu dubbed version.
  • Second-half pacing is uneven.
  • CGI effects need refinement.

Analysis:
“Kaantha” offers a unique cinematic experience by combining retro aesthetics, strong performances, and emotional storytelling. Dulquer Salmaan shines, supported by Samuthirakani’s nuanced role and visually stunning cinematography. While the pacing and dubbing are minor drawbacks, the film’s period authenticity and storytelling make it a memorable watch for audiences who enjoy classic-style cinema.

Bottom Line: Retro Classic

Rating: 3/5
