Plot
Mayilsamy, popularly known as MS, is an innocent man from Coimbatore who wants to fall in love before getting married. His conservative family, however, pressures him to accept an arranged marriage. Frustrated by their demands, MS leaves home and travels to Chennai.
Devayani is also trying to escape a future decided by her family. Her relatives plan to marry her to a controlling man in exchange for ₹57 lakh. Refusing to surrender her freedom, she leaves home and begins searching for an independent life.
MS and Devayani meet in Chennai and gradually become friends. Their shared struggles bring them closer, but the lies they tell their families soon lead to misunderstandings and comic chaos. The central question is whether their relationship can survive the complications they have created.
Overview
Hi is a simple romantic comedy built around love, family expectations and personal choice. Director Vishnu Edavan keeps the narrative light and introduces several quirky supporting characters to create a lively family entertainer.
The film works best during the natural conversations between its lead characters. However, its low-stakes approach also limits the emotional depth of the story. Several promising family conflicts are introduced but not explored fully.
Performances
Kavin is convincing as MS and uses his expressions and comic timing effectively. His easy-going personality makes the character likeable even when MS makes questionable decisions.
Nayanthara brings confidence and emotional maturity to Devayani. She performs particularly well in scenes where the character challenges MS and asserts her independence. Her pairing with Kavin feels fresh and pleasant.
K Bhagyaraj delivers enjoyable one-liners, while Prabhu receives a warm and satisfying character arc. Radikaa Sarathkumar plays a familiar emotional mother role. Sathyan, Aditya Kathir and Amrutha Srinivasan contribute to the comedy.
Technical Aspects
Cinematographers Leon Britto and Rajesh Shukla give the film a colourful and attractive visual style. Chennai and Coimbatore are presented with a bright appearance that complements the breezy mood.
Director Vishnu Edavan handles the romantic portions with restraint, but the screenplay becomes crowded after several family characters enter the narrative. Some emotional ideas needed stronger development and a more satisfying conclusion.
Music
Jen Martin’s music supports the film’s cheerful and romantic atmosphere. The Rasagulla song is catchy, while the melodic background score adds warmth to the relationship between MS and Devayani.
The music remains pleasant without overwhelming the narrative. It helps maintain the film’s relaxed tone, particularly during the romantic and emotional sequences.
Editing
The editing keeps the first half moving at a comfortable pace, especially during the establishment of the lead characters and their friendship. The second half becomes uneven as additional misunderstandings and family complications enter the story.
Several scenes could have been shortened, while a few emotional conflicts required more time. A tighter final act would have improved the film’s overall impact.

Hi is an uncomplicated romantic comedy that delivers several enjoyable moments without taking major narrative risks. The chemistry between Kavin and Nayanthara keeps the film watchable, while the supporting cast adds humour and family chaos.
The film also touches on meaningful ideas involving personal choice, rejection and controlling relationships. However, it rarely explores them beyond the surface. The screenplay repeatedly hints at a more emotionally powerful story but chooses a safer and more conventional direction.
Hi remains pleasant entertainment for viewers seeking a relaxed romantic comedy. It may not offer the emotional weight or comic consistency required to become a standout film, but its appealing performances and breezy presentation make it suitable for a casual watch.
