Sattapuli, played by Suhas, dominates the competitive boat-racing circuit in Kalingapatnam. His position is challenged when Mallesham, played by Mithun Jaishankar, forms a new team and prepares to take him on.

Kali, portrayed by Soori, returns to help Mallesham confront the reigning champion. His arrival brings back memories of a painful past involving Sattapuli, their mentor Munayya and Munayya’s daughter Angel.

Kali and Sattapuli were once close friends who trained under Munayya, played by Sathyaraj. Kali was also in love with Angel, portrayed by Mahima Nambiar. A betrayal eventually separated the friends and forced Kali to leave both the village and the woman he loved.

Years later, Kali returns to settle unfinished matters and challenge Sattapuli’s dominance. The reasons behind their fallout and Angel’s decision to distance herself from Kali form the central mystery of the narrative.

Soori delivers a convincing performance as Kali. His rugged body language, restrained emotions and mannerisms suit the role of a fisherman shaped by hardship. He handles the mass moments and emotionally demanding scenes with confidence.

Suhas makes a strong impression as Sattapuli. He effectively portrays the character’s authority, arrogance and hidden complexities. His variations across two different looks give the role additional weight and make the rivalry more engaging.

Mahima Nambiar offers a natural performance as Angel. Although the romantic track follows a familiar path, she communicates the character’s emotional conflict without exaggeration.

Sathyaraj brings dignity to the mentor figure Munayya, while Ravindra Vijay leaves a respectable impression. Mithun Jaishankar performs adequately, though the supporting characters receive limited space to develop.

Cinematographer S.R. Kathir gives Mandaadi a strong visual identity. The coastal locations, fishing community and boat-racing sequences are captured with authenticity and scale.

The racing scenes are the film’s technical highlight. The climax and whirlpool sequence create genuine visual excitement and offer the kind of spectacle that works best on a theatre screen.

Director Mathimaran Pugalendi deserves credit for choosing boat racing, a subject rarely explored in mainstream South Indian sports dramas. However, the fresh backdrop is attached to a predictable story involving friendship, betrayal, failed romance and revenge.

The production values are solid, and producers Vetrimaaran and Elred Kumar support the director’s vision with an appropriately mounted presentation.

G.V. Prakash Kumar’s background score effectively elevates the emotional confrontations and boat-racing sequences. His music adds urgency to the competition and supports the film’s rustic coastal mood.

The score is more effective during the action-driven moments than in the romantic portions. While it enhances the viewing experience, the soundtrack does not consistently overcome the screenplay’s familiar emotional beats.

Editor Pradeep E. Raghav maintains reasonable momentum during the racing portions, but the narrative slows when it moves into extended emotional and flashback sequences.

The first half successfully creates curiosity about Kali’s departure, Angel’s distance and Sattapuli’s transformation. The second half provides the answers, but some revelations arrive through predictable dramatic situations.

A sharper flashback and tighter romantic track could have improved the pacing. The film becomes more engaging whenever it returns to the racing conflict.

Mandaadi distinguishes itself by entering the rarely explored world of coastal boat racing. The setting gives the film freshness, and the racing sequences deliver a visually engaging theatrical experience.

The first half raises interesting questions about Kali’s past and his relationship with Angel and Sattapuli. Suhas’s well-written character strengthens this conflict and gives the drama a credible opponent.

However, the answers revealed after the interval follow familiar commercial-cinema patterns. The betrayal, exile, romantic separation and eventual comeback offer few surprises. The hero’s journey through multiple obstacles towards victory also feels formulaic.

The Telugu version suffers because the dubbing and visual localisation do not feel complete. Jerseys and other details remain tied to the original Tamil setting, reducing the adaptation’s effectiveness for Telugu viewers.

Strong performances and technically impressive races make Mandaadi watchable, but the routine screenplay prevents its distinctive sports backdrop from becoming a memorable film.
