Ugram Review: Dull and diverted cop thriller

Ugram Review: Dull and diverted cop thriller
  • 05 May 2023 01:24 AM

Allari Naresh made a good comeback with Naandhi. He worked with the same director, Vijay Kanakamedala again for Ugram now. Let's see what the film has to offer.

Story: Shiva Kumar (Allari Naresh) is a sincere cop who goes to any extent for a righteous cause. But after a span of 5 years, tragedy strikes him as he loses his memory and loses track of his wife and kids. He then starts an investigative journey to find them. Will he be successful in the pursuit?

How did the actors perform?

Naresh has undergone a good makeover for the role of a cop. He looks fine in this complex role. He has the right demeanor and intensity to play the role. He challenges the actor in him with this role and film.

Mirna Menon and others perform to the best of their abilities and they are alright at best. The rest of the supporting cast is of decent pedigree.

What about the technical finesse?

The director Vijay picks an interesting premise, where he deals with an upright cop who lost his memory and is in search of his near ones. But he falters in the narration as the proceedings lose steam rather quickly.

The background score and cinematography are of very good quality. Especially the low-lit visuals in the fight sequences have come out well. The production values are also very good.

Analysis:

Ugram is the story of a sincere cop who loses track of his wife and kid after losing his memory and then goes on a journey to find them. This is a decent premise and has a good scope. But the uneven narration and incoherent screenplay have acted against the cause for this film now.

Naresh is excellent in the role and he shoulders it with great intensity but the lack of impetus in the narration is the spolier.

There's too much effort to commercialize the story and the whole film. There are too many fights in the course of the film, which doesn't bode well. A sincere and honest narration style would have worked better for the film.

The romantic track between the lead pair is least bit engaging and could've been chopped off. More detailing was needed for the memory loss track in the film.

The ending isn't satisfactory enough, given that the steam is already lost with unnecessary diversions in both halves. Towards the end, we get a feeling that the story isn't rounded off in a fitting manner.

Verdict:

Ugram is a dull and diverted cop thriller that has its moments of brilliance but gets sidetracked with the unnecessary urge to commercialize the presentation. Over use of fights also works against the cause.

Rating: 2.25/5
